New addition - A610 off Ebay

Postby A610beaver » Thu May 19, 2011 10:27 pm

I managed to get time to view the A610 I won on Ebay earlier this week. Yes I realise buying an 18 years old Renault - unseen is not the smartest of moves but most of you are keeping hold of the good ones and I decided that I needed to own one again.

The car has failed its MOT due to underbody corrosion. I've not had it on a ramp yet - just poked about underneath and I can't find anything serious. The rear subframe still has original paint on it as has the front. Even the usual spot at the front wheelarch behind the front wheel is still only showing surface rust starting and is solid. I need to get it on a ramp.

I was hoping to find that the power steering fluid was dry hence no power steering but no - not so lucky.

Brake inbalance is due to sticking calipers.

The engine sounds good - good oil pressure, new clutch about 10K miles ago. All MOTs and service receipts from new. Trip computer works, no damage to lights, no drop of either door, passenger window works, drivers doesn't. Aircon works - yes, that's right, the air conditioning works!!!!

Roof has a big lump of filler lifting. The rest of the body is OK, a couple of small blisters on the drivers door. No overspray on window rubber trim.

No play in driveshafts, rubbers not split, no serious oil or fluid leaks.

Broken centre bin hinges, phone holder fitted but dashboard not drilled. Carpets scruffy, seat foam OK, leather badly scuffed but should come up well with leather treatment (don't like leather in these cars).

Headlining dropped, brake disks good, 5-6mm tread on tyres, alloys with slight scuffs and marks.

Carpet dirty, no signs of accident damage repaired or otherwise.

Everything stacks up to this being a genuine sub 100K miles A610 that has been loved most of its live but has deteriorated through lack of use over the last year or so.

I'll get some photos up once I get the car delivered to my storage shed but all looks OK up to now.

Any ideas on where I start looking for the power steering problem?

Hi PaulyA610. It's human nature to be pissed about "the one that got away". As is, I would say it was worth the money to us enthusiasts but at this price level we are all just buying a lot of work and probably a lot of trouble. There are so many things that could still need serious expense so just be glad you haven't got that to contend with.

One of my other all time favourite cars sold at £5200 with me having the 2ns highest bid - I missed it by £100. A couple of weeks later - the trader that bought it had it up for £11K.

How pissed off do you think I feel!!

Pas pump is a long job to get at, but is very similar to a similar age Clio.
Rupert had one where a motor brush had got knocked out of place.
Failing electical issues, BBA reman will repair the Clio unit- might be persuaded to tackle yours- its only a different tank on the same motor/pump.
If its not leaking it shouldn't be an MOT failure even if it isn't working.
I think the pump only runs with the engine anyway- you can hear a gentle wine at the front.
The PAS is "light" in my experience anyway, the steering isn't that light with it.

Good luck!

The UK just doesn't recognise A610s for what they so picking a UK car up for £6K and selling for £12K over the water is easy when you need rid. If enough do that, the day will come when those of us who feel the need to own one will pay double where the prices are today.

The way I feel right now, I want to see this car looking stunning and going as well as it looks. I wonder where A610 prices will be by the time I do all that. To double my money a decent A610 will have to be about £30K and I suspect it will be a while before the prices get that high in the UK.

Thanks for the advise. I'm not getting the car home for a while yet so I won't know but I'll be reporting back.
