Gearbox Leak

Postby KiwiGTA » Sun Sep 23, 2012 10:17 am

My GTA has started leaking oil recently so I took out the engine last weekend and discovered it wasnt the engine but the gearbox leaking from inside the bellhousing.

So I took the bellhousing off today and instead of finding a seal at the back of the bellhousing as I expected out came this steel tube with an o ring on it.

I presume (I havent had time to check it out yet) there is a seal further inside the gearbox that the other end of this tube seals against. Is this correct?

I would also presume that I would need to replace this seal in the gearbox and the o ring at the bellhousing end. Am I on the right track?

Are there any tricks getting the seal in and out? Can I do the job with the gearbox in the car?

Any help would be most appreciated

Hi Ross

Yes... I had this many years ago..... there is a seal deep inside the box which can only be got by removing the box and splitting it. I was advised to change the tube as well. The tube was not expensive, but better replace it while the box is out rather than find it is a problem after.... clearly change the O ring as well.
The job is not difficult, but time consuming.

PS. These pics may help. Lip seal (No. 34 in exploded diag) is itemised on pic 1.

Apparently, all these seals gave trouble in the first few years of these Alps lives, but by the time I came to replace mine, a modified seal was produced....... had no trouble since. :D
