Update and such.

Well, it's kicking my butt! I am getting too old :sarcasm
Worked for about 6 hours yesterday and I think it's ready to come out. May find a stray wire or cable, but I think it's basically ready. Ran out of daylight.

Findings:
Corrosion, corrosion, corrosion of the cooling system. No way type D has been in this engine for a long time. Contemplating using the Nissan stuff as, we are told, should be compatible after the Ghosn years. Plus, not enough type D locally, has to be ordered. Well, we can run with that for now. No 5L bottles here and its now 8 GBP per liter and we need 6-7. We did find Elf fully synthetic oil, 4L for 20 GBP. That's cheap here. Some oils cost that per L here. Oil filter is a Bosch and was 10 GBP.

Good News:
Nothing broken except for some of the old, hard plastic around some connectors which we will figure out a way to fix. Just a slight bump and they crumble. Goes with the age of the car.

Surprises:
Most of the job so far has been textbook (thanks for all the tips guys). The most time consuming bit by far is getting to the top 2 bellhousing bolts under the slave cylinder cover. Rusty nuts, bolts, things in the way, etc. But we had success and they have been safely removed. Not sure yet, but I can see that the dust boot on the slave cylinder was never installed correctly, but it's not leaking or oozing anything. Hope it's OK.

Next steps:
This Sunday engine will come out and will at least go back in and get bolted up. May run out of daylight to finish, but the big jobs will be completed and all the bellhouse bolts will go back in.

Oh I should have said. I believe the Glycoshell TypeD coolant is now standard OEM on Ferraris so there must be a few of them local out there - you might find it that way.

If not then new normal coolant is certainly going to be better than what was there before so I wouldn't fret too much.

Keep up the good work and post some pics.
I'm just here for the gasoline.

Hi all,

Let me say thank you and I will never do another one of these clutches outside in a driveway! I would do another in a garage, but not outside. It was soooo cold! Sometimes we have to do what we have to do.

Progress:
After a day of fiddling, and cursing, and the like (not to mention a shattered back glass, it was an accident) we got the engine 3/4 of the way out and i decided to do the work there instead of taking it all the way out. The water pump shaft gave us the most problems. Plenty of space and easy access at that point. Put the new seal in, cleaned everything up, and popped in the new clutch. Forgot to take a pic of the old one, but it was as worn as can be imagined.

Then came my biggest headache....lining the input shaft to the clutch splines. Took about an hour of fiddling then POP! I thought no way. Did something break, what? Amazingly, it slid into place, I bolted them back together than had 2 pints of Old Crafty Hen and went to bed. I will spend next weekend bolting everything back in place, but I am relieved that the lump is back in place safely. More later.......

I did say it might fight .I've done the same and would always drop the guts out now but needs must ,top marks for effort :Cheer
Before you go too far reinstalling I'd check the slave cylinder movement and try and spin the lump listening for anything untoward .
I have had a release bearing jam up after a fight to get alligned so check you have at least half an inch movement on the slave .


Rear glass is a pisser but I do have an option for you that could be shipped ......

I have had bearings bind up myself. Here is what I did; the boot on the slave cylinder is perished. the cylinder looks relatively new, but they boot was not on all the way and got bound up then torn. Don't know how to find another one at the moment. Also, the boot for the fork has perished and I should have know that would have been the case. Anyway, i removed they cylinder and slid a wedge between the tranny case and the fork essentially lodging it into place all the way back on the output shaft. Once everything was in, I removed the wedge and I have some play back and forth, hope it's OK and we will see soon.

As for the back glass, amazingly we found one on the Japan equivalent of eBay for about 75GBP at the moment, no bidders. Really was unfortunate, we were removing it and my counterpart pulled up a bit too hard and shatter! Part of the game and nobody got hurt.

If this one does not happen, can you quote me a price?
