GTA Turbo starting issues

Postby Lloyd2002 » Wed Jul 22, 2015 8:27 pm

After laying the car up for a couple of months while I waited for a new set of Samco hoses to arrived, I've spent the last week changing the plugs, cleaning the connections to the injector plugs and obviously fitting the hoses.

I charged the battery and tried starting it last night, but no joy. Searching the forum I found that user 108002917 had similar issues about 10 years ago to what I was experiencing, so I followed some of the pointers on that threat and took out two of the plugs, one on each bank.

However instead of starting, the electrics went dead and I heard a relay ticking like crazy under the bonnet in front of the driver. Then all the electrics went dead. I removed the key and the relay was still going crazy but I couldn't locate it exactly. I disconnected and reconnected the battery, now it appears to have dramatically drained the battery in an instant - is this possible? Is it just the relay that's had it, or could there be bigger issues?

No relay related to starting on the GTA .Only the two near the ECU for fuel pump and injectors .A610 has a starter relay .

JohnC to the Blue Courtesy phone please.....

Off the top of my head I would say a bad earth somewhere, don't think your car has an Immobiliser or anything fitted when I had it.

This maybe of use as I had a similar ish problem with Merlin. Sorry I must have deleted the pictures from my photobucket account but you should get the idea.

If you can hear the starter solenoid clicking, it's possible that the starter motor has stuck. Mine did this a few times until I had the starter motor changed.

You can resolve it / unstick it by hitting the starter motor with something firm like a wheel brace. Alternatively, try bump-starting the car.

All this assumes that you have plenty of electricity going into the starter...

Just saw this and it reminded me of a problem with my GTA, not as extreme and I am not fully sure what problem you are experiencing as far as non starting but, mine used to drain a good new, well charged battery in a week or so and I noticed as you connected the earth it would ark slightly.

To find the drain I wired a 5w bulb in series with the earth which lit easily showing it was a pretty substantial drain, then removed the fuses one at a time until it went, which it did when I removed the courtesy light/ (and I think) stereo fuse.
Now lights I can live without lights inside, but Bee Gees......nah gotta 'ave Stayin alive........need tunes.
So fuse back in and as I could hear a relay clicking when re-connecting the earth, so I ran a lead long enough to go into the car from the earth terminal on the battery and one on the earth to the car then inside the car I could click it in and out and feel which relay it was, turns out it was the courtesy light timer I think, so I pulled it out and that's how it has stayed.
No idea whether its a bad relay or a problem somewhere else, but its on the snagging list.
No more problems draining batteries, sorry it doesn't fully explain your situation, but may jog others or yours is a more advanced version of mine?
