A different question on A310 V6 speedo

Postby Matsgeo » Sun May 01, 2016 4:34 pm

Hi all,

Greetings from Sweden! I have a purple(!) A310 V6 that I am restoring partially right now.

I have searched all over for this but can't find an answer... when I removed my dashboard, the speedo cable's two connections got disconnected at once.

Problem is, my speedo has five spade terminals!

Does anyone here have a picture, or the knowledge, of how the speedo should be connected to the cable? (And, if possible, the rest of the dashboard, even if most of it seems to work.

(Yes, I did take a picture of it before disassembly, but some cables were simply so short they snapped right out. :( )

Many thanks in advance!

Mats

If you know the manufacturer of the speedo gauge, they may be able to define what the 5 connections are for, then you can decide where to connect your 2 wires.
Are there any markings on the back of the gauge.
I would guess that some wires will make the gauge work and some wires are for illuminating the gauge at night.

Which model is your car, Phase 1 (3 stud) or Phase 2 (4 stud)? The speedometer wiring could be different.
My car is a Phase 1 and has a mechanical cable drive from the gearbox to the speedometer. The Phase 2 possibly has an electrical signal from a wheel sensor for the speedometer display needle.
I think the only electrical wire/s on mine will be for dial illumination when the exterior lights are on.

My car is a phase 2 with the electric speedo. I think it is a Jaeger, but it is not well marked.

I don't think the extra terminals are related to illumination or dimming, as there are two separate holes for lamps which have their own power connection. Only the grounding is connected to the casing.

I'll need to have a bit of a search through my photos, but I may still have some from when I took mine out to have it repaired (odometer was not working).

Found them!

Mine's a 1982 (1983 model year) A310V6. Photos with the wires were taken through the windscreen, the one without wires shows what colours go where. Between the two sets you should be able to work out what goes where.

B = Black
R = Red
W = White
2R = 2 Red wires

The yellow wires are pretty obvious.

(Ignore the red wire that goes to the speedo bar/casing - that was a test to see if earthing was a problem, which it wasn't!)

OK, not quite there yet - now my turn signal is hooked to the main beams and when I switch on the turn signal, the speedo ticks :crazy

Still no speed reading on the speedo. I'll try again tomorrow.

Even if the results weren't there, it was a nice day to fiddle with the cars! :)
