Fuel Consumption...

Postby a22 » Sat May 31, 2008 12:03 am

Yes (probably) going over old stuff but I can't find much info via the search of forum...

just what is the fuel consumption of owners?
My atmo 1985 LHD, does about 19-22mpg round town, city somewhat driving....

Get her on a european motorway and she does 29-33mpg.... as smooth as Frank Sinatra on valium?!!!

Think I have manually tuned the carbs (triple Solex) very well, passes the MOT emissions easily.... hopefully not too lean...?:?

What are other owners figures? Both Atmo and Turbo? Also maybe A610 and LE Mans (CAT)?

Would be interesting to see? other owners experience/ tuning/ performance regarding jetting (atmo) etc?

My GTA Turbo always averages about 28mpg, I only potter to work and back about 10miles a day. On a good run I get around 32-35mpg, much better mpg than my old Saab c900 turbo

Without making any special effort to drive economically I average about 24mpg in my turbo during mixed driving. (That includes visiting the red line more than once or twice! :D ) I can reach the low 30s at a steady motorway cruise.

That's according to the fuel computer anyway.

I get exactly the same from my Turbo.

I was averaging 34.9 on the way to Prescott, that was "Captain Slow" mode though doing 60-70 mph.

Around town 22-28 depending on how much I use the load pedal.

I suppose you need an Atmo owner to give their views on MPG, JohnC?

I was going to refrain from giving my mpg, as there is a 40mph speed limit, dropping to 30mph, and 15mph over here, so how about 45mpg

yes, it seems by the replies that the Turbo maybe slightly better on MPG and also performance obviously.. not that 30 odd Mpg is bad at all for either (Turbo and Atmo) by a longshot.

Was previously looking over some old motoring magazines from the 70,s, very good to read and I didn't realise that sports cars back then were doing pretty poor consumption.... on average I would say about 14mpg (round town) to 22mpg on a run, that is taking an average somewhat... (maybe generally even less than this for sports cars around (3-4 litres).

Some of the 70's-80's Ferrari's didn't seem to have that good results, I mean obviously more exclusive maybe than an Alpine but not really that impressive performance/ economy. Surely, both factors could be relevant when deciding if the car is of a good design? I mean, probably owners, however rich, would rather have a car that has good economy and performance rather than a complete 'gas guzzler'?

As for American cars over 4 litres... they maybe did only 10mpg odd.. De Tomaso etc... probably no faster (or slower)than an Alpine... yet I think you may have only got about 8mpg sometimes! Wonder if it went around corners as well?
As for Jensen Interceptor 7.2.... maybe also as low as 8mpg? Dig deep in your pockets at the petrol stations I should imagine...

Yes, the Alpine has quite alot of good points really.... I think again performance/ economy is a very relevant factor and should speak volumes for the past and future?

In fact by these magazines it is probably no worse(consumption) than an MGB of the 70's, what were they about 1798cc?

Well maybe 'silly' comaparisons because the cars are of different times somewhat but have always found comparing cars of different times (performance/ economy/ engine size) interesting.....

post some more Alpine consumption figures if inclined...

A310, with triples, high lift cams, etc etc etc  14.7mpg after rolling road, on a 'sort of' combined cycle (average over 300 miles). About 12  before RR.

Off to hardware shop now to buy a leaf blower!!

A610 averaging 23.9 on my 26 mile round trip commute to work. Also averaging 30mph! I hate this country.

My fuel computer doesn't work but I reckon to get just under 25 mpg around town and over 35 mpg on a motorway cruise from my atmo.
With the price of petrol what it is at the moment I just did a trip from Surrey to Bath and I stuck to 70 mph on the motorway and I appeared to get about 40 mpg for the trip - not bad for a 3 litre car!

consumption...

Postby a22 » Sat Jun 14, 2008 1:02 am

yes, interesting to see these figures, the A610 looked pretty good- 24 odd-what mixed driving conditions- motorway and town?

I have somewhat noticed that a somewhat general rule/ approximation for many cars generally consumption wise(not just Alpines); is if it say does 20 around Town/ City driving- 30-40mph odd then when on a run / motorway (70mph odd) it does about 10mpg more (generally/ approximately). So if ones car does 15mpg round town it may do about 25mpg on motorway...

As it seems our Alpine's do 17-21 odd around Town then translates to maybe 27-32 odd on motorways.. (the Turbo's slightly better than the Atmo it seems- smaller engine/ more efficient combustion process(Turbo)) ? Think this is the case...

Clive's figure of 40mpg on motorway I think is probably slightly innaccurate. The best I think I have seen or heard is about 33-35mpg for an atmo and maybe Turbo may get 34-36mpg(motorway) Don't think 40mpg can be possible (unfortunately).

I always measure the consumption by totally filling the tank to full rather than relying on the computer (which may well not work, very useful:evil: ) and then caluculating the miles/ litres that it took to refill.

When I had to sort the car out/ carbs/ plugs/ running etc, I did not know how the Triple Solex's worked. Got the mixture screws totally (seriously) out and got as low as 12mpg or less even (round town) When I learnt them the consumption went upto 20 odd! That is a small fortune over a year in petrol if you used the car alot. I also had a Nissan Micra(1 litre) which did about 33 mpg, I altered the mixture and it went upto 45mpg, at the half turn of a screw! The car also ran all smooth when before it 'pinked' under load (too lean).

Again very good really for a 20 year old design (ALPINE) to get 30+mpg with it's 3 litres odd. Should think that is still highly respectable even against modern car consumption figures?

Any more figures ....? So far it looks like the best is Turbo at about 35mpg on motorway..... The 310 owners post didn't look to good at 14mpg odd  but by the looks of it, #I think he had tuned the car/ souped it up... Same I think may happen if one fits other carbs to the atmo (We

Clive-maybe I am incorrect

Postby a22 » Sat Jun 14, 2008 1:13 am

Yes, excuse me Clive for saying that I do not think 40mpg is possible... well, I still think it is not... BUT if you think you have managed it then PLEASE tell me exactly how the carbs are adjusted... ~?

It maybe that I am wrong and you are getting this? I hope so? My experiementation is first carb(Single) mixture screw turned right in (makes leaner). The doubles mixture screw right out(makes leaner). They work opposite.... Trouble if you think they are the same which I did at first (12mpg)!!

Right now I am getting 19-24mpg round City (30-40mph) and 28-34mpg motorway (70 mph).

Thanks again for the sharing of info/ club etc...

yes, I may make it sound slightly better than it is; when I say I get between 19-24mpg round town maybe most of the time I am getting 19mpg. As when I get 28-34mpg on a run I am on average getting 30mpg. I have though on occasions seen these higher figures, last summer drove through Europe and at one point got 34mpg. Generally though it was more like 30 on average, again pretty okay considering about 70-90mph, whoops typo, I meant 80mph.

I have been experimenting with the mixture screws for about 18 months now! - what fun  Sometimes just turning either the singles or doubles just a fraction of a turn, then measuring the difference from the previous setting.

There again it maybe time well spent, considering the current price in fuel prices, think it is about £5.40 a gallon? A few mpg extra could translate into quite alot of money being saved over 3000 miles or so. The car now runs really smooth and accelaraton has improved drastically from how it was before I started fiddling with the carbs.
