wiper mechanism

Help!
Wipers have stopped working - but get a little wobble when switched on so think something wrong with mechanism.
Am trying to remove - have found and removed the 2 screws '1' in the manual but it won't move??
I'm guessing that I need to remove something on the outside where the stalks connect but the 32mm nut seems to be plastic and just squashes when I try to turn my adjustable?
What am I missing??

Yes you need to remove the plastic 32mm nuts on the outside under the scuttle panel. Soak in WD as they are probably seized solid. You then might have to use a hammer and chisel approach to get them moving.

When you get the mechanism out you can then strip it down and grease which should solve your issue.

If it helps and you can get down to me, I'm working from home all day Thursday so we could have a go at it then if you want?

When you say "under the skuttle panel" that is confusing me. Do you mean by skuttle panel the 2 plastic pieces over the wipers covering the joint between the windscreen and bodywork and housing the washer nozels.
Those plastic nuts look very fragile! Are replacements easily available?

Similar thing happened to me once. It was winter and salty roads etc.

Anyway, before taking it all to bits, it's worth trying to pour/spray some lubricants down the poles of the wipers. Take the wiper arms off and then feed WD40, perhaps also some teflon spray etc. (sorry can't remember all the stuff I used) and let it run down the poles into the mechanism.

Freed mine up a treat. Just put it down to something that also needs a bit of lubricating from time to time.

Remember he's a breaker not a saver ...he'd probably try anD flog the battered nuts as well :lol:

You need to remove the outer trim then get a 32 socket ( preferably deep ) and they will come off easily .I can just get purchase on them with a std socket but you are right on the limit of grip .

It's a tried and tested method, if your very careful...

The nuts even if you do slightly damage them are covered by the scuttle panels so you don't see them.

Just get a deep 32 socket and problem solved .I know it's a big outlay £4 or more but you could always hire it out :lol:

Thanks Guys for your help as ever!
All sorted now - biatch of a job!
Those plastic nuts actually spring back to shape and you can be quite butch with them!
I used mole grips on em - a few scratches but as Bigy says - they're hidden. Deep socket was £9 from Halfords and didn't want to wait for an ebay sale!
Anyways for those who have to do it in the future you have to
1. Move the heater fan housing which is 2 screws and needs man handling (doesn't seem like it will move) to side away from battery.
2. Remove wiper motor
3. Then remove wiper mechanism - 2 bolts at back which you think you will never get back in but you can with a long stem on socket driver.
Didn't manage to get the washers back in - what a stupid bit of design - why not just make the bracket the right size?? Super glue might have worked??
1 spindle was siezed solid - remove circlip - drift out spindle (leave a nut on it till it moves - I didn't and have a shorter thread on that spindle now!) - wet an dry, grease and reassemble.
When you re-install put everything back but leave the attachment of mechanism to motor till last. Put the rod over the motor spindle but don't tighten. then spin the mechanism, watching the wiper spindles till they are about to do their wipe stroke and tighten. Voila!
