high idle

Hi all,

My GTA turbo has been behaving real nice recently :D (after a bad summer) which means that i have enjoyed some nice drives in this late summer weather :D :D

however, the last week or so it has started to idle higher than normal (about 1500rpm as opposed to just under 1000rpm) when the engine is warm. it also runs quite rich and uses a lot of petrol... when the engine is cold its runs perfectly... :shock: :?

any ideas? thanks

could be the fuel regulator..... or a pipe that has come off it or perished/split? Maybe???

I had to replace the return hose from the left hand bank to the regulator few weeks ago coz was leaking... its now a bit longer than the original to made sure it does not kink

Water temp sensor .
The one on the LHS of the pump .Check resistance relative to temp.
Take it out and leave to stablise for a while .Then pop it in a pan with a thermometer ....or just hit it with a heatgun and see what it does ...
20 degree 283 to 297
80 degree 383 to 397
90 degree 403 to 417

Also (sounds silly I know) but check the throttle is returning fully.

The pulley under the plenum can foul on the main water hose and restrict the movement. I had this happen and it only occured when hot, basically the water hose would expand when hot and under pressure and the small pin on the pulley would sometimes catch and not let the throttle close totally back to idle.

Fixed with a cable tie around the hose.

I will check that... do you have a picture showing the sensor? I suppose if the resistance doesnt change then it means that the sensor is knackered?

Darren,

the throttle cable shows signs of tiredness.. lots of strands are broken between the pulley and the end of the cable sleeving. I am planning to replace the cable and Mr Dell is looking if he has a replacement one in stock....... (Renault leadtimes are over a month for the cable.... )
i looked if the broken strands were not stopping the cable to return but didnt look at the water hose, so will check that too

Definitely worth checking the throttle. Make sure that it is opening and closing freely. Many years ago the mechanism on mine went a bit sticky. No fun having a stuck throttle but really easy to fix with a bit of teflon spray lube or the like

Also (and I had this before), check the throttle return in the footwell.

Take the plastic cover from around the pedal box out and spray the pedals with WD40, remove all the gunk and crud, then relube with lithium grease or similar.

It's unlikely to be the fix (unless the pedal feels overly stiff) but you'd be surprised, and being floor hinged they to tend to trap dirt. If nothing else when you get the other problem fixed you'll have lovely smooth moving accelerator, brake and clutch!

looks like a great connection there :shock: as soon as i tried to separate both parts of the connector, the wire snapped :evil: so i trimmed it and soldered it back in place :oops: as i couldnt get the pin out...

i checked the resistance when engine cold 288 ohms and when warm 390 ohms. so it looks like the sensor works.

still idles high though............. :(

checked the throttle again and it seems to move nicely, plenty clearance

pedals are moving nicely too, i have already cleaned that recently...

Search on here for IACV... mine went just as I was buying the car (but got the garage to replace before i signed). I then remember coming across a thread on here that explained the logic behind it's operation... and also a step by step diagnosis.

Mine had this problem a while back. The next thing is it will start flooding and or backfiring.

Change your engine temps sensor as Lee suggests. Your close on your readings but not spot on and its a sensitive area- if I remember correctly around £30 from Renault :D :wink:
