A610 Misfire at high revs and full throttle

Postby r5gordini » Wed Aug 31, 2016 9:27 am

Hi all,

I know there are existing threads discussing misfires but I have a specific issue that's just occurred and would like to know if anyone else has experienced the same and can offer any pointers.

The car has been unused for 3 to 4 weeks and started briefly once or twice in the intervening period. Ran perfectly ahead of that.

It has now developed a Misfire at high revs and full throttle. If I accelerate hard to the red line, it feels like there's a wall that the car is trying to push through from about 4500 rpm. It's accompanied by pops and bangs from the exhaust.

The distributor cap is 6 months old. Bosch. No idea of the age of the plugs, leads, coil or TDC sensor.

Any suggestions of what I should look at first?

Thanks in advance,

Andrew

Hi Andrew,

When you say revs past 4500, if you were to rev the engine up gradually, whilst stationatry with no load, would it or dies it still do it?

I would get the plugs out and post a picture, sounds like they are fouled and not cleaning up.

Cheers,
Martin

Sounds a bit like damp in the distributor cap, think it would be the first place I would look

I've had this and I too thought it may be plugs, dizzy, rotor etc..
Turned out one of the air hoses was not tight enough and boost pressure was being lost when you really need it.
Obviously it doesn't show up when you're not boosting it.
I'd check ALL the hoses for tightness. A hose even a teeny weeny bit loose can make all the difference :up

All sounds like good advice. I would start with the dizzy cap/rotor then boost hoses.

Awesome. Thanks guys. I will take your advice. I am picking up yet another car tomorrow. My first foray into Rolls Royce!!! A 1984 Silver Spirit. Going to sell my EBS Renault 5 GT Turbo if anyone is interested in it.

A610 will be stuck in a station car park for another day or so, so once I get it home I'll take a look. It hasn't broken down, it's just a victim of last minute alterations to my plans.

Still loving the A610. It's definitely a keeper!!!

Andrew,

TDC sensor is new, plugs replaced 5 years ago and the leads ( Magnecor ) replaced 2009 and the coil is original. But as you know the car has done hardly any miles, so tdc, plugs and leads should be 100%

Have you turned the boost up? Could be an issue with the fuelling not coping if it's well above standard.

At last! An update. Can you believe how long it is since I posted last?

I can - I've been distracted by another project:

It's a lot of fun!

I tried to take the Alpine out yesterday but it died on the driveway, so I gave it another go today. It's now misfiring horribly. It seems to be getting a lot worse! I changed the coil today but that made no difference. It must be the distributor cap, but it's only a year since I changed it last. Better get spannering! I do hear they are very temperamental. I bought a proper Bosch one...

It doesn't want to play because you don't use it enough ...end of.

Hehe... I think it got a sulk on 'cos I bought the Roller and concentrated on that for the last few months instead! I have a 6-month warranty on the Roller so wanted to drive it all the time to iron out any faults.

And yes, I'm sure you're right, Lee!

Anyway, I have fixed it (at least for now). Strange that I fixed it as soon as the Roller went back for the warranty stuff!

Here's a thread on it:

http://www.rollsroyceforums.com/forums/ ... o-far.html

Felt like I wanted to diversify the collection a little ;-)

The fix? There was a thin, oily film inside the distributor cap. I don't know why, except that the camshaft oil seal might be leaking??

As I posted earlier today, I'd love to go distributorless.

And all the contact points were pretty cruddy so I cleaned them up, refitted and went out for a drive. Perfect!

Thanks all for your help, as always.

I think checking the distributor cap (they appear to always be damp) is up there with the 'Check your Earths' as the top 2 Alpine answers. ;)

Yep - didn't buy the Rolls for weddings, but it will be nice if it pays its way. No bookings yet ;-)

The previous owner ran it as a business but failed. I don't want to do that. Again it would be nice to get an income from it, but I just want to enjoy the car. I'm getting withdrawal symptoms with not driving it since I handed it back to the dealer!

My idea is to use the Rolls for bride/bridesmaid transport and the Alpine for groom transport.
