I'm going to take covers off at least, top and bot for a nose,ya never know ,as Lee says, it might still be a liitle thing adrift :lol:

Easy to say isnt it "it's the crank".

Exactly what's the crank?

It hasn't snapped in half has it.... and excessive wear will lead to poor oil pressure before ultimate failure. There really isn't a lot to go wrong down there, it sounds more likely (if it is at the bottom) that a big end has worked loose. As long as you pull it to pieces before it finally lets go, it could be a simple matter of new conrod bolts and a set of small shells - this CAN be done in the car. Hell, I could probably have the bottom end off it and check out the big ends in under an hour (sump easier to remove on a GTA!), but you might end up springing for a new sump gasket. For a terminal failure of the crank or one of the journals or caps, well, I'd french kiss Mr G :-D

Crank ,as you say, could be 'owt ,he was pretty sure it was bottom rather than anything else though .
On the little run up the road I listened more closely, it doesn't make a noise under load but as soon as you lift it does :?:Sitting on the drive it will rattle with higher revs :?

Let me know when your almost here Martin and I'll put the kettle on :lol: :lol:

Do you mean by that the bottom casing of the engine?

You can't really 'remove' that as thats what your engine is sitting on, youd have to remove the whole engine like Richard said to do that...

Definately sounds big end/rod related seeing as it does if off load..

This is really clutching at straws and probably irrelevant if its making the noise while stationary but I had similar symptoms - horrible knocking noise on overrun went away under load. Turned out to be loose wheel nuts - I was convinced my gearbox was about to drop its gogs all over the road. Worth 5 mins with a spider before you get into the oily bits.

What width are the big end bearings :cry: :cry: I bet they're not 19 mm wide are they :cry: :cry: Found this in the sump ,shell bits ,big lump split through oil hole .Is it a main journal :?: It looks like it's been adrift a while ,smooth edges and same colour even on the sheared face .There are a few bits of copper shavings that are new looking as well so mayhap they aren't related :? The slivers are in situ as it came off .

Next problem is to see if its damaged the crank in any way..

So the 19 mm wide bit isn't a main bearing :?:I only ran it for a mile after the noise first appeared so fingers crossed .Are the shells off the shelf ? price ?

Mains are about 23mm wide..I have a set here in front of me..

Try most good motor factors, Federal Mogul make big end shells for the V6...

Big ends are quite a bit bigger. I got a set from Simon Autos....took 3 days to arrive and were quite cheap.

Meca add 19% tax, then they ignore your emails and dont send your order. 3 weeks later they send a set for an atmo. True story :lol:
