Surely this is the difference between a "commercial" job and one that is done more like "as a favour". I got an 8 hour £900 job done on my Lexus for nothing, I did it myself so I could pay the mortgage after Christmas, bargain.

I take it he doesnt do it for a living then??(or he is very poor!!). It takes a knowledgable Alpine specialist a whole day with all the equipment and 2 people (ARR fitted one to one of the Irish lads cars on their way back from Dieppe a little while ago). I had some knowledge all the equipment and help and it took me 2 days and my car is a lot easier to work on than a standard car as I have junked a lot of stuff from the engine and bay. All I was saying was that its a long job and you'll need a ramp etc to beable to do it in a sensible amount of time(it has been done without a ramp but it looks seriously difficult to pull off!), the job is at least double the work of a 5gtt and you really need to buy a genuine Renault clutch (as I found when I tried to fit a cheap Partco example...or didnt rather!)
I think you need to introduce everyone to this guy.....he sounds like a bit of a find!! :D

Uprated parts

Postby Tony Smith » Sun Feb 26, 2006 3:49 pm

If you need to uprate the clutch Simon Autos does an uprated cover and plate for about 500 E the pair on if you can get one an A610 one from Renault - I waited nearly 6 months for one! As for injectors I would recommend 6 x 21 turbo injectors which are rated at 285cc /min or thereabout compared to the 185's in a GTA or 335 in the A610. Alternatively I'm planning to use an 7th plenum fitted injector to lift the fueling capacity by about 50bhp in my track car. The good thing about the 21 turbo ones is I've been saving them from all the cars I've broken so there free!

Tony, have you actually fitted the 21 injectors to a car and tried them??
I take it you are planning to buy the DG ECU for your track car to run the 7th injector??? I will be interested to see if this works....it is something I'd consider, I'm just not sure how it would give such a huge jump in power??

Injectors

Postby Tony Smith » Sun Feb 26, 2006 4:10 pm

I had planned to use 21 turbo injectors in my 3 litre to cut costs but they had a special on A610 injectors at Renault so I bought a set (cost about £200). If you have some way of controlling them then they are a good size to use for 250-300bhp (I know from experience with 21 turbos that they comfortably fuel 200 bhp (4 injectors) at standard fuel pressure. If you buy Davids ECU they would be ideal - I just got off the phone with him and he has assured me it will be running next week (Delay has been due to having to have a crankshaft sensor machined and fitted to the front pulley due to the ECU not being able to read the flywheel teeth configuration correctly). The standard GTA ECU is a nightmare to run with bigger injectors - its set up with a very small injector but with a very high pulse rate so any change of size on the stock ecu has quite a large effect compared to most other cars - the A610 went the other way with a big injector and a considerably slower pulse rate

7th injector

Postby Tony Smith » Sun Feb 26, 2006 4:27 pm

I'm trying to build up my track car with as little cash as possible so budget mods are the order of the day. The 7th injector kit comes with its own controller that will run of preset manifold pressure so you can dial in the boost pressure when it starts to fuel and is fully mappable from that point on. Will run up to 4 additional injectors (each rated at 50 bhp at maximum flow) so there is scope to just increase the fueling above the standard factory limitations. Its made by the same people who make Aquamist and its called an MF2. http://www.aquamist.co.uk/cp/mf2/mf2.html

Car will probably roll out close to standard as I won't get to use it this year if I started playing with the engine so it'll be standard turbo running 15 psi, my old exhaust off my black car (Devil gp N) some induction modifications, and I'm going to cut a panel out so I can reach the tdc sensor and modify the mounting to dial in a couple of extra degrees of advance. As I already have a N2O kit in the garage I may run a 25bhp shot into the first plenum as a chargecooling/anti-lag measure and use the MF2 to control the extra fuel.

Couple of quick questions Peter, do you run into noise problems with the straight exit exhaust fitted (its very loud on my black car) as I'd like to fit one to my trackcar but am worried about exceeding the noise limits. And is it compulsory to have a roll cage fitted to go in modified production class?

Yes, bigger injectors will be fine for more power, the only thing is the RR will have to completly remap the dastex fully accross the map instead of just tweaking certain areas as it now..

The problem you have is overfueling at off boost and idle periods..

Piggyback units do not controll injectors directly, they just modify the original map sensor signal that the original ecu see's, so if you have bigger injectors and you are running 16psi, but it is overfueling becuase the original GTA pulse width is too wide, the dastek can be programmed to lower the voltage from the map sensor, so the ecu only see's say, 13psi, and fueling will be correct...

A problem with this is the fuel reg which is pumping in more fuel through boost pressure doesnt correspond to what the ecu is seeing, but thats a different matter...

The main problem is, at -20 vacuum on the boost gauge, the map sensor is reading its lowest voltage, so the dastek cannot be programmed to lean the map out by lowering the voltage, as there is no lower voltage to make, so you get lots of overfueling on idle so don't go too large on the injectors..!

Also, you have to remember, there is no useful mapping after 14.7psi, as the GTA mapsensor is a 2 bar absolute sensor. If the RR map your car for 20psi, it will fuel exactly the same at 14psi, so if you run a boost pressure lower than 20, it will overfuel massively...

Tony, you wont be allowed NOS if you want to compete and yes a roll cage is compulsory for every class other than the standard road cars where it is a recommendation. The minimum standard is the half cage with 4 legs. You need to figure out what you want to do with the car, and get a licence so you can read what the blue book says about modifications. Most championships in England run classes as per the blue book, but it would be worth checking round because there are some subtle differences in some places (the Scots allow road cars to run without carpets and with list B tyres.....but they are an extreme example because they allow Caterhams to be in the road car class too!!!), you might find somewhere that will allow you to run your list B tyres in the road class. You may also find some kind of thoroughbred class that they might let you run in. When I go to Scottish organised events I now run in the thoroughbred class they introduced last year. (no idea how they decide what is and isnt thoroughbred mind!!)
As for noise problems, no I dont (not yet anyway!)but then I am allowed up to 105db (Ive seen 104bd max so far). If you are building it as a track day car as well as competition then you might get thrown out of a few places as they tend to be stricter than speed events.

You could always buy my single exit exhaust that I had on my red car..

But half the emmissions, and as only half the exhaust gas comes out, you must be only using half the fuel!
