:?: I have bought some standard brake discs, 20mm ,any thoughts on the wisdom of getting them drilled/grooved :?:What style/pattern

IMHO, I think groves are better.
They can help scrap the surface off the pads evenly, rather than the drilled holes which just leave stripes on the pads.
Groves also encourage a better disruption to the air flow which should aid better cooling.
As for disipation of heat, the increase in surface area is probably anout the same, but the hot air will get out of the groove easilier than a hole.

As for a pattern, a nice parabolic curve, have a look on the tarox site for examples.

where are you getting them done because i was going to get them done on my r5gtt which had willwoods and they said a stupid price so i didnt bother

Was going to go with a variaton of the Tarox 88 pattern ,was wondering more about depth/width of the grooves themselves and also the standard disc's strength ? Can't see a problem myself, but always willing to be told NO YA Twa............
Steve, I will get them machined by one of my toolmaker mates ,got a set of old discs to experiment on so that will tell how easy a job it will be .The dics aren't that hard so should be quick to do .

Drilled discs will crack eventually under heavy use but they do look good!

Remember 20mm was only standard for the first year of producation and the spec was upped to 22mm to prevent warping!

20mm is now the minimum wear thickness for the discs.

I guess this is why all aftermarket discs start to warp under heavy braking as no-one wants to pay out for the 22mm versions from Renault

Still with 20mm's at around £10 or so in Maccess (see members area) you can afford to replace them on a regular basis!

I have spent a lot of time researching brake discs and pads. Cheap discs are a waste of time either because of inferior materials and or because they are machined too soon after casting so the metal has not de-stressed. Grooves can increase braking efficiency by up to 5% and also reduce risk of warping as they let gases escape. There are various groove number options. Drilling reduces braking efficiency by up to 5% and increases risk of cracking. It is only needed in race conditions where maximum heat dissipation is crucial. It does look good. You can also have dimples that tend not to crack. Best manufacturer of discs is National Auto Parts. They make discs for all the good people including EBC. When your order is received by them, they machine the de-stressed discs for you. They dont keep machined discs in stock, only the castings ready to machine. Price depends on spec you require & carriage but they are not outrageous. Best pads are EBC red stuff (never use green stuff on an Alpine) or yellow stuff if you do a lot of track work. Yello stuff are to special order only. You can order NAP discs and EBC pads from Autobits in Farnham. Phone 01252 711765 and ask for Dudley. Best web site for him is www.cartouchuppaints.co.uk. He also does any touch up paint or aerosol except Montana Red as the formula is too dark for 776 paint code. I know that because I have a Montana Red A610. What a pain! Hope that lot helps. 8)

I've got some brand new Lucas discs ,anyone used these :?: Min thickness marked as 17.7mm.Am going to put 3mm wide grooves, 1mm deep .No dimples .

interesting......when you coming over to test them out then?

have found a road which makes Le Revard look like a straight motorway :twisted:

a freind of mine took me for a tour, he has a road spider no screen and I followed him, what a road, car stood up to it though, even though i locked upp the odd front wheel going into a few corners! and i had a deer run accros the road at one stage! missed him though.

It would be good to get the race car out on these roads and it makes life easier with the sequential box as every corner is a hairpin!

Won't be fitting them for a while .Trying to remove the atmo front dampers at the minute and they are rustier than a Gentleman's uprights.......................
