Some experiences shared

Postby Peter Doyle » Fri Jun 23, 2006 4:42 pm

:D Back on the road after 9 months, sailed thro MOT so time to look up where you guys are meeting! Dead keen for a spin somewhere now!

Of course somethings are never quite 100% going back in as when they came out! Anyway a few observations and questions if you experts can answer it would be appreciated!

Drive Shaft Pins - Are these cemetrical thro 180 degrees or is there only one position (in 360) you can get these pins driven in. One shaft went in fine but the S/Hand unit I put on seems to be out a couple of mm when you line up the pin hole! I can't believe I am a slpine out because its so close!

Rust - Nearside Wheel Arch back frame corner just behind strut base... actually close but just left of the Subframe bolt... What a crappy area for rust that is...
Anyway I have had a small plate welded here - not more than 100mm Sq.
On checking to see my welder mate wasn't going to set wiring or anything else alight the other side of this I found this area is exactly where the sweep of one of the turbo pipes comes within MM of the frame... I guess this is a common area for holing? Anyway if you own a Turbo and are not aware of this and your feeling really good right now go and have a prod around see if you have the same problem? I guess some lagging on the pipe may hold this back from happening again? Anyone else found this?

Trip Computer Read Out - Putting back I thought mine stopped working... not so but its so dark I can't see anything... When I had it apart I couldn't see where this was illuminated and improve it... clues please?

Headlights - There crap and I can't afford the triple super dooper ones listed.... Any quick fixes the silver looks OK but my handy man torch is brighter than dipped beam - Conversion - Anyone used Alfa's or something and made up there own set or is this impossible for some reason? Plenty in the scrap yards! .

Look forward to meeting you somewhere soon any meets near Wiltshire or Glos soon?

By the way how do you get your car pic alongside the postings?

The drive shaft will only go on one way so that you can get the pins in.
Maybe you just need to take it off and rotate it 180 degrees and put it back on the splines.

Head lights, check your earths. Also check the voltage at the light unit, low voltage nornally indicates a poor connection somewhere. You could try a temporary direct wire from the battery just to make sure.

I'll be at Castle Coombe on Saturday 1st July for a sprint meeting and most will be at Bromley this Sunday.

And the picture on the left is the "Avatar" which can be set in your profile. It needs to be a certain size though.

Bulbs!

Postby darrenbiggs » Fri Jun 23, 2006 5:31 pm

There is a small bulb that provides the back-lighting for the trip computer which can pop. Did you check this?

WRT the headlights, main beam should be excellent on a GTA but for dipped I run with higher wattage bulbs.

From memory I think they're 80/100W - 'For OFF-Road Use Only. (Not DOT Approved)'. I'd need to check though. They're not the daft 'Xenon blue' chav-boy versions so no-one has ever failed it on an MOT or anything.
I'm just here for the gasoline.
