Top MOD 2

Postby spryboy1974 » Mon Apr 02, 2007 7:00 pm

After finishing off the ABS conversion on my car at the weekend i have to say that if you have the means then do it!!!

It's not as bad as you may think.
The main part of the loom that goes into the car,(for acceleration sensor and warning light),is already built into the standard loom,so all you need to do is plug the ABS loom from the pump into the block connector behind the OS headlamp and then onto the battery.
Remove the fuel tank to gain access to the master cyl so you can blank off one of the outlets.
Fitting of the pump and brake lines is easy and you can bleed the system the conventional 'pedal' way.
The trickiest part for me was to fit the acceleration sensor under the heater box in the car. The foam has perforations in it so you can easily remove the bit where the sensor goes,(soundproofing),and the holes are already in the tunnel.
The hardest part is doing up the self tapping screws, but with the help of the misses she held the 'bit' in place from the passenger side whilst i used a spanner to do them up from the drivers side!

I took the car out last night,(the check light comes on and then goes off after about a second),and even driving the car relatively slowly the difference was great!!!

I have a stupid question, but I'll ask it before every one else.

What do you mean by "even driving the car relatively slowly the difference was great". I thought ABS would only have any effect under heavy breaking when wheels would be locking up or when on a very slipery surface.

Good one Neil :!:
How many rhd were fitted with the ABS I wonder ?Dred to think what the parts would cost from Renault if even available
Would you have to wait till another one died to source it:?:

You can drive relatively slowly and still jump on the brake pedal!!

Clee,i am hoping that the system will be reliable and not need any major parts changed. :D
The only major part would be the pump itself as the master cyl is all the same.
ABS rings may possibly be a problem in the future??,but where theres a will theres a way!!! 8)

If anyone else wants to have a go I have almost everything required for one more car.

The case of the computer is dented though so would need opening and/or trying in another car to confirm it is still functional.

Neil, did you take any photos of the conversion?

Didn't bother to take any photos as when it all went together everything was self explanatory and really easy as regards the install. 8)

Glad you got it sorted Neil, when we were taking the parts off the donor vehicle I thought it was too much work, I wouldn't know where to start with regard to brake lines etc, well done :!:

Renault ABS

Postby Tony Smith » Wed Apr 04, 2007 8:08 pm

None of the 5 GTA's I've had have had ABS but I've had plenty of other Renaults with it and rarely has it not been a pain in the ass. My GTA doesn't go out in the rain and I'm a wuss in it if it does get caught in a shower. I prefer the idea of upgrading the discs and calipers.

I did have a look at going down the bigger disc/caliper route but was a little put off by the prices.
£515 + VAT per caliper alone was too much.
( I want to keep the original wheels really so this is limiting my options i guess)!!! :?

Anybody knows if the ABS system on the 21 turbo is the same, i think it is, do you reckon it will fit a GTA straight in?
