ATMO coil

Postby Ohms_GTA » Fri Apr 20, 2007 5:56 pm

Hi all,

Got into the GTA today and the damn thing wouldn't start. Was cranking it for ages, but just would not fire. I ascertained pretty much straight away that this wasn't a fuelling fault due to the stick of petrol emanating from behind me.

Did a few checks and unfortunately it looks as though my coil has gone west.

Was looking for replacements and came actross the MSD blaster 2 coil which seems to be very reasonably priced. Does anybody know If I this will work with my standard igntion system with no other mods?

Thanks chaps :D

The ATMO engine and DeLorean engine are identical apart from the atmo uses carbs and the DeLorean uses K-Jet injection. The ignition system is identical. Even the coil is in roughly the same place in the engine bay.

On this basis, you might like to investigate the toys on this page, including a number of different coils to consider. This company is a one-man band and I've met John on several occasions. His service and procucts are usually top notch, and shipping costs are very reasonable and quick (I recommend global priority). He's also happy to mark down value on packages coming to England so you don't get stung for tax...

I've found the standard OEM coils to work best and last longest. UK rrp is around £60 so with the exchange rate the way it is, go stateside :)

That's a great site Martin.
Do you know if many of the parts will fit GTA also?

Excellent site. :D

The reason Iask about the MSD blaster 2 coil is becuase I have been offered one by my mate at a very reasonable price.

just not sure if it needs a ballast resistor or whether there's even one in the standard set up. :D

Pedant.

What does any of that have to do with ignition ? The engine is internally identical apart from slightly higher domes on the pistons (CR). Cams and heads are identical apart from the K-Jet injector ports. The crank case is identical apart from the mounts being 2" further back. In fact the Renault manual actually shows an R30/DeLorean crank case.

Okay, the rocker covers are different. The DeLorean actually has stuff mounted to them.

NO PRV is absolutely identical across two cars that I can think of, if you want to be pedantic. Not even the R25 turbo and GTA.... Safrane and Laguna..... Espace and R25..... Volvo 760 and 260...... XM 24v and 605 24v....

There is. Same as on the DeLorean, just less visible in the engine bay! You have the same bomb-proof ignition amplifier too. (grey box)

I was just making the ambigous post clearer for everybody else. :)

You mentioned the engines were identical, AND the ignition was identical, hence it doesnt look like your talking about the ignition in the first bit, thats all..... 8)

Sorry, Dave. I was a bit blunt in that post. I don't think I was entirely sober either...

Actually, maybe you can answer this - what Renault cars, other than the GTA, got the 2.8 odd-fire ? I believe late 25's did prior to the EFI engine but I have yet to find one.
