How to get a new key and fob.....A610

Postby mettersl » Sat Jul 12, 2008 5:40 pm

Hi
I have just "misplaced" one of the keys for my car- the infra red remote variety.
To be sure I have had a new key cut from the spare, but no remote (and therefore no immobiliser turn off). So if I need to use it I'll also need the immobiliser key. Fortunately I have that.
Looking at Renault forums I need to get a key of the right age (£10 quid from ebay), a new blade for it (4.50) and then get it cut to match.
Then there is the matter of reprogramming.
Anyone know
1) Can I get new keys from anywhere but Renault (allegedly 150)
2) If I get a second hand one which ones do I need (I have assumed similar age Laguna or Safrane will be fine).
3) Does anyone have reprogramming information? There seem to be people on ebay selling this, but I thought I'd ask first.
The worlkshop manual is silent on all this.
Many thanks
Lee

This seems to involve sitting in the car and holding the central locking button in the car until the doors lock then unlock, then you press the button on the key fob to sync it, never tried it myself but heard it works.

Don't buy keys off Ebay you will be wasting your money as each key is unique to each vehicle unless you buy a complete system that is the same type for your car.
Email/pm your vehicle details & exactly what you want and I will get a price etc.

Well after a few months of doing nothing, followed by a quote from Renault of £87 plus vat, for a new key I have finally replaced my lost key with John C's help.

Renault wanted two weeks (after an initial in person visit- photo ID, car reg and a utility bill before they can order) to provide me with a key- "provided Alpine let Renault know the code"...

So I decided to have another go. Three ebay keys (about £2.00 each) later I got one that was the system John described in earlier posts. Every key I have is different- and only 1 was reprogrammable.
Most are electrically programmed (including the 610 original) and I doubt it will be possible to reset them, even though theoretically they should be reprogrammable too. These have "Renault" written on the back and a philpps screw holding them together.
The one that was reprogrammable was an earlier design -1991 or so, with the Renault logo (not name) on the back and a conventional screw.
This was adjustable (with a soldering iron and magnifier) to match my receiver- and it all works! Amazing, but it took 2 goes to get it right.
So if you lose a key (or want a spare) it can be done- just ask John for help (or me as a distant second best).
If you don't fancy the reprogramming, "just" get a clio/laguna/safrane/espace? set of key fobs and the receiver and it should all swap over. The key blades unscrew so you can keep the locks and change the plipper independently.

Good luck (and many thanks to John)
