No Clutch!!!

I was out in my GTA turbo last nite and I started to have some difficulty selecting gears. I was speaking to Simonsays and I now think it is the clutch master cylinder cos I noticed some fluid in the footwell. He also advised me to change the slave cylinder at the same time. I then phoned our Renault franchise to price the parts and the master cylinder is about £60 +VAT but I got the shock of my life when he told me the slave cylinder is over £110 +VAT!! Anybody know where to get them a bit cheaper?

Do you really need new cylinders or could you get away with a new set of seals/rubbers for them?

On the subject of seals, its always better to get a new unit. Normally if the seals have gone, then you can get scoring on the piston. This then causes it to fail second time around pretty soon with the new seals...and youve got to pull the car all apart again!

David is quite right that the cylinders are usually better replaced, but occasionally they are fine. You'll have to pull it apart and check to see if you can get away with it.
In my experience (not on alpines), once a re-seal lasted 6 months before I had to replace the brake cylinder. Whereas twice I've got away with seals on a clutch cylinder. Having said that, on a gta (especially turbo) they do have more heat to deal with than most other cars.

I meant master cylinder, not brake cylinder. :roll:
