This was probably meant to be! Our Mitsubishi Pajero Evolution story required a credit to Fast Classics for providing the car for our shoot. And in their current stocklist was a very obvious contender for today's Spotted.

Yes, just a couple of days ago we were looking at the first new Alpine for over 20 years. And this? This is the last. With just over 2,000 miles on the clock and a life thus far on show in a Renault dealership it's arguably the closest you could get to a brand-new Alpine until the new one arrives in 2017.

The Alpine Vision's retro styling harks back to the iconic A110 Berlinetta. But for those with more recent memories the GTA and A610 it spawned are, perhaps, the cars we think of when we hear the Alpine name. Indeed, it's almost a pity Renault has decided to go for retro pastiche with the new car, the A110 very much of its 60s origins with the A310 and GTA respectively putting 70s and 80s twists on the original format. Likewise the A610, which maintained the wedgy, hunchbacked stance of the GTA but embellished it with some very 90s flourishes. Arguably not quite as stylish or pure. But, by all accounts, actually a much better car to drive.

Priced at a punchy £39,995 this car's showroom fresh condition has added a hefty premium and puts the A610 on equivalent terms with the Porsche 911s it was up against when new. Certainly interest in these cars will grow as more noise is made about Alpine's return as a brand too. And while the usual debates will rage about the merits of protecting the investment value of ultra low mileage cars against finding one you can actually use there's something rather beguiling about finding one with such originality. How many miles could you put on it without destroying what makes it such an incredible artefact? Would you dare just use it and say sod the resale value? All questions for the thread to follow.

Right now if you want a 'new' Alpine - and one with the manual gearbox the new one will deny us - this is your best option and one we'd applaud anyone taking!

Not sure I would agree with the comment that the A610 is a better car to drive than the GTA. I was lucky enough to have the
opportunity to have driven both types when they were brand new models and IMHO there was not a lot to choose between
them. Sure the A610 had more oomph, then again it should do running 250ish bhp as against 200 but the reality is that
the A610 tips the scales at 1420 kg as against the GTA turbo at 1187 kg and that means that the performance difference
isn't that marked.
Moving forward 20 odd years or so it means dependant on which model you've got how much rust do you want to be dealing
with, ask Lee at RATS, he knows

I reckon they are both about the same power to weight these days .......610's rust like feck and there's so much more metal in them to do so .........GTA far better purely because there's far less to rot,easier to get at and probably better original steel and construction.
Every 610 I've had in has had a lot of rot and we've done 8 in the last two years I think ....but ...on the plus side if you come up North you get a good deal ....I had one customer that was quoted £8k just to do the sills on his and we ended up doing nearly a full blown restoration for about 10......

Having driven and owned several ATMO's, GTA Turbo's and A610's the 610 is the better car to drive. Performance doesn't necessarily mean the be all and end all of a "better drive" does it? Although the A610 is slightly quicker (all the tests in the day back this up :Butt ). The A610 is just more planted and feels much more solid on the road and thus in my opinion is a better car to drive. Plus apart from the cutting out the electrics seem much more reliable than the GTA. I remember I was tinkering almost every other weekend on both my Turbo's with various issues. Both A610's have been very reliable (touches wood).

Having said all that most other multiple GTA and A610 owners prefer the GTA to own so what do I know? :crazy

I've said this many times before as well, and that is that the GTA in comparison is much better value for money on the second hand market. The Le Mans GTA is the best looking of the breed too. I always wanted a Met Grey Le Mans bodied GTA with an A610 engine. I was close to this when I bought the ex John Law A610 (RIP) and also had access to some Le Mans bits. I bottled out of it though. Cest La Vie.

Well I think it's all down people's driving style. I think thay are two totally different cars, the 610 is more refined and feels a lot more solid, and is the car I would take on a long trip, but it feels heavy and lacks feel compared to the Gta. If I am going to go out for a hard drive Gta every time, feals light sharp steering, you know what is going on with the car, where the 610 you feal insulated .

BigM is well insulated also so that's probably why he prefers the 610. lardy feckers both
