Rad Fans (GTA turbo with AC)

Postby Dave Williams » Sun Apr 17, 2016 9:57 pm

Anyone know if both Rad Fans are supposed to operate at the same time ? Only one rad fan comes on when stationary...or if the AC is on ?
Thanks, Dave

Both on when A/C on. However you can wire in parallel so that both come on at the same time.

Thanks Jon..
Only the drivers side rad fan operates for me..
The passenger side fan works if I apply power directly..so the fan is good... I know the rad sensor has three pins so I'm wondering if both rad fans only operate if things get really hot...
But if both are supposed to run with AC then I have an issue I guess...
I'm going to draw a picture..as there are 3 relays involved...

ok - so I think I understand how this is supposed to work...though I don't know I fully trust the Renault wiring details - or the diagram of where the relays are..nor do I trust that when the fans were replaced before my ownership that someone got creative with the wiring...so a perfect storm...

I made a diagram based on what the wiring book seems to be telling me...but for the reasons above, this may not be reality or correct:
Fannily Enough.jpg

Case1: AC switch is on both fans run at ~50% (in series)
Case2: Rad is at 92C both fans run at 50% (in series) (switches off at 82C
Case3: Rad is at 95C both fans run at 100% (in parallel) (switches off at 80C)
Does this sound like what was intended ?

what confuses me is how on earth just the one fan works with the AC button pressed - in principle that should not happen if one fan does not work ...as they appear to be wired in series.
I think I just need to go and test...I think I'll put some breakout wires in the relay panel to work out what's what...in the worst case I could probably manually wire up the other fan to the relay panel.
I've no idea what the thermal cutouts are either...maybe that 298 item is broken

If anyone has any bright ideas pls let me know !!

...so the wiring diagram book is a complete fiction in terms of the relays for a RHD car with AC
I found a couple of relays/fuses near the drivers headlight...one was defective so hopefully that will be it
bit confused about what the relays under the dash are for...the wiring book lists these as fan relays 1,2,3

anyway - I'll see if I can find a new relay...and try to work out what connects where...and update my diagram so the next time I'm not scratching my head.

The Renault A/C stuff is total fiction as it only applies to LHD cars, all UK cars were fitted post production at Reader Air Con.....

yes..I naively thought that at least the rad fan relay positions would be the same/similar...the relay panel is pretty full..begs the question what my extra relays are doing.

So I found a suitable 30A relay in the parts bin...all sorted now...
