Alpine 310S Accelerator and Pedal Sticking

Postby Alpine Racing » Fri Jun 10, 2016 10:28 pm

Good Day Everyone,

I am new to this forum and hoping I posted this in the correct topic...

I have a 1982 A310S Group 4 and am experiencing sticking of the accelerator which gets worse after car comes up to temperature.

Any deflection of the pedal (when the car engine is warm/hot) will result in sticking in THAT position. I then have to physically reach down and pull the pedal up and then it will return to idle.

I have dosed the carburetor linkages, the pedal area in the cockpit and what minimal amount of throttle cable is exposed with WD40, Blast, etc... which is helping, but is still a very big problem.

To make matters worse, I have been invited to bring this car in 1 week to the "Eyes on Design" Auto show AT EDSEL FORDS ESTATE! :)

Note: When the care is "cold", the throttle moves freely... once the car heats up, it is sticking majorly.

Any help would be appreciated, I looked in my repair manual (in German btw) and it shows the clutch and brake pedal assemblies, but not the gas pedal/accelerator portions.

Thank you for any help you can offer,

"Stuck" in Michigan USA

Hi Gary, I experienced the same on my A310. It is most likely corrosion on the shaft that the accelerator pedal is fastened to. To cure this you need to take the shaft out, via a panel in the transmission tunnel side of the passenger footwell which is behind the console trim and footplate. Once you get to this you need to remove the two screws at the bottom of the pedal and slide the shaft out into the passenger footwell. Clean the corrosion from the shaft and put it back with lots of copper slip or high temperature grease. This certainly cured the issue for me.

It could be worth checking the cable at the pedal end too. Mine was sticking on lift off, in other words the pedal wouldn't come back to the rest position freely when warm. Turns out the cable was down to its last couple of strands, and eventually snapped.

I was not too far from home, so I ended up pulling the remaining cable through to the engine bay, then threading it through to the interior, and hand operating the accelerator cable. Good job I was close to home!!

There's a panel that can be removed on the left hand side of the passenger foot well under the carpets to gain access. I fixed it with some Ikea curtain wire, which was just the right thickness to poke through the cable sheath :up
