Steering universal joint

Postby Buzzer » Fri Dec 31, 2021 5:47 pm

I’ve been busy getting to grips with the GTA. Working on the brakes and steering. Stripped out the tank and eventually got my steering rack out. Most things came undone ok. Fortunately the car had been rust treated.
The bottom UJ on the steering has play and needs replacing or overhauling and the bush at the end of the rack needs replacing.
So any advice on locating these parts would be helpful

would suspect the steering UJ is a common part, rather than a specialist Alpine part.
Maybe check with Simon Autos. Call Andreas and ask him where it comes from.
and of course let us all know what he says.

Hi Simon,
Buzzer bought some stuff from me, including a steering UJ and rack, unfortunately the UJ was also worn and he then overhauled it with a standard joint UJ.
Simon do offer a service exchange at 118 euro plus a surcharge for the returned part (not that easy to send back these days).
The joints are about £20 on Autodoc, so I have bought one to go in my spare GTA UJ and am trying to persuade keen fabricator child two that he needs to show me how to fit it. As I dont have a GTA any more, its not at the front of my list...
The 610 part is a different part number and I've not looked at the differences as yet, but I'm guessing its the same joint in the middle.
If anyone wants details of the bits, PM me.

A bit more info on the replacement steering joint. the size is 16mm x 40mm. so any good quality joint of that size will fit.
The current joint is held in by crimping the yokes around the joint so make removal very difficult but this is the process I followed to remove and replace the joint
Removal was done by using a cutting disc on a dremel to cross cut the yoke and seen in the attached pic. 2 cross cuts were needed to be able to remove the cups inwards. Trying to push the cups outwards woulds have resulted in damaging the yokes.
Again with a dremel and a small grinding stone I gently removed the crimping in the yokes of the old cups so that the new joint cups can be pressed in.
I did try and recrimp the new joint in but could not get a solid fixing so I drilled for 4mm cap head set screws that with a washer hold the cup in place on the yokes as seen on the pic. a bit off filing off the yokes to provide a flat surface for the washer to sit against.
hope this maybe useful.
