Andy, quote the whole sentence -

Tony Smith wrote: I want my car how I want it, not how the MSA want it, although I'll obviously have to comply with any safety requirements.

If I have to have roll cage etc then thats what it will have. Is a fire extinguisher necessary?

And Peter I'm grateful for any advice but Its fairly obvious if I'm stripping everything out, modifying suspension, brakes and engine quite radically that i'm not going to be allowed in standard production class.

It seems that the majority of serious competitors in standard production class bend the rules wherever possible anyway!
A policeman wouldn't bend the rules though surely! :D

you can't bend the rules...... that's why they have scrutineers! extinguishers are compulsory in circuit events for obvious reasons :!:

rules are not there to be bent or broken, it is about how they are interpreted.

I would think there would be very few Scrutineers that would know what a GTA should have. Their only way of knowing, unless you have done something really obvious, would be by comparison to another. So you should all turn up with simarly modified cars, or only have one of you running at an event.

I was a Scrutineer for 12 years, and found everything, from ported heads on production cars, bigger cams than allowed for a class, nitrous, illegal lightening, and so the list goes on. I am sure there was plenty I missed even when you are diligent. It is amazing the thinking that goes into some mods.

I also found that it was the mid-field runners that cheated the most, not generally the ones at the sharp end. The mid-field runners said that the front guys must have been cheating, because they were and weren't beating them. The good guys practice, and spend hours on dynos, trying different oils, coils, plug gaps, camshaft position etc looking for the extra Hp or torque.

So what would you call the subtle lightening that Peter has done, surely removing weight where it can't be seen without dismantling parts of the car is bending the rules, other people I know who have entered standard production class have always done similar things. I know someone who had standard looking door trims but behind them the doors were completly cut out, the electric window motors removed etc. I'm not saying I'm against what they are doing but if its not bending the rules then tell me what I should describe it as?

There is a difference between simply removing stuff from the car and actually replacing panels say with carbon fibre or something - ie. modifying.
I recall when the mini miglia front runners had their cars reskinned in a thinner gauge steel..... and had to change it back!

Firstly.....Stephen, I think you'll find the GTA fits the bill perfectly, amto and turbo are the same car.....after all you wouldnt class a 2.5 Mondeo as a different car to a 2 litre would you?
Tony, I have lightened my car to the letter of the law...the regs Ive built it to state - all interior trim must be retained but soundproofing can be removed. The car must retain all standard equipment such as heaters and fans. All body panels must be of the original material and all glass must be retained. As for your comment about it being obvious that stripping the interior would lead to the mod. prod. class........it depends on wether you fancy competing in Scotland (or possibly NI...simonsays??)......as long as you retain the seats in Scotland you can strip the car and run standard class......its all about knowing what youre going into....nothing is obvious!!!!
Knowing the rules and how far you can go is part of the business.By stripping your car and adding a roll cage you will be safer but you wont have lost any real weight. The sticky tyres will be worth a bit, but if you really want to gain get a set of slicks and a set of wets.....I would say slicks are worth a couple of seconds in a minute on almost any track.

And to put that into context, that 11.5 second quarter mile R5 Turbo runs in Modified Production.
