How to take the engine out off a GTA

Postby Buzzer » Thu Jul 28, 2022 1:57 pm

Some advice, what's the best way to take an engine out of a GTA?

Try a search as there is info on this,it may only be in the members section but joining the club is the best money you can spend on your Alpine. Plus you are helping fund the website. Good luck and take care.

I've decided to take the whole engine and subframe out from underneath. looks fairly straightforward. disconnecting the gearbox controls looks the trickiest. The 6 subframe bolts will come undone and as I've overhauled the brakes disconnecting these was easy.

Getting it back needs a careful application of a hammer to get the location pins in.
There is a guide somewhere but it may be on the old site.

I couldn't find anything much here on removal and refitting. I also need to find and engine overhaul manual. I have it in french but not in English

engine and box out. cleaning took me ages. while I was at it I refurbished the wishbones and got them shot blasted. Took some effort to undo the wishbone bolts. I had to use some heat in the right places and a grinder. the antiroll bar bolts had to be cut off but the bushes are all in decent shape so just some new bolts required. One of the lower wishbone allen bolts was stuck too so had to cut off the chassis bracket and re-weld the bracket together as I didn't want to totally wreck the bush as they are bonded into the wishbones.
I did find balancing the subframe engine and gearbox was a bit tricky on my trolley too.
Next job strip out the engine.

An update on progress. Engine rebuilt and upgrading the carb to the holly unit. Gearbox stripped checked and rebuilt with new seals. subframe powder coated and wishbones blasted and painted. I managed to get the failed alternator rebuilt at a place just south of Reading. New diode bank and bearings.

Cheers. All back in this afternoon. I’ll post a few pics later this week. Dropped the body ok. The tricky bit was the reverse gear cable routing which was tricky and aligning the rear chassis engagements requiring the use of a bodger to get the hole aligned. I assembled everything apart from inlet manifold and exhaust silencers to fit. Next job connect up the dodgy electrics

Well done Buzzer the one time I saw this done it was lower the body onto the subframe and then hit the subframe engagement point with a rod and hammer until it dropped it. Alpine precision..."just the electrics" ;-)
