HKS equivalent

Postby Tony Smith » Thu Nov 17, 2005 5:58 pm

I had a hks evc fitted to my GTA afew years back and it produced good results when set up properly but is complicated to play around with. My advice would be get somebody to set it up properly on the rolling road

What about the boost limit cut-off in the ECU, does this device over come that?

No, its just a electronic solenoid device that monitors boost to the turbo actuator, so if it senses a drop in boost it will control the actuator to maintain the set boost level.

If you have a decent new actuator and a decent hybrid, you wont get this problem in the first place..

You need to remove the boost limit .12psi would seem to be the max on original setup.Once you've done that the worlds your clam....................................The ART box of tricks coupled with the manual unit will run to 14+ :?: Not sure if more ,my car has a BBR ' CHIP' mod that seems to take the limit out completely so am running 16+ in these crisp conditions

Doesnt have to be an exhaust leak. Just by boost's nature, the moment you come on boost, the charge is cooler than when it it holding and saturating the intercooler, and this will affect the gauge reading.

If not, you have to rememeber these are old engines...inlet valves, piston rings etc...

I think you'll find you have to sacrifice performance for style with a GTA  All wisdom would seem to point to 280 bhp MAX .....................................you should be seeing more than 12 with the cutout removed tho, wind the manual in  It may be me, but there's a lot of smoke and mirrors involved with turbo related performance issues, a lot depends on the engine design/layout itself ,silk purse ..............ect..................It's an old ,compromised lump, if you're looking for out an out power look elsewhere ........

A interesting reply from prima racing re; there heads and cams, (sure it will have been mentioned before? 280 bhp would be nice though.

Hi,

The heads are modified pretty much to their limits giving around 25 BHP. It is better to fit modified heads and also Kent cams as this gives around 40 BHP and a big improvement in torque.

Both the heads and cams are supplied on an exchange basis.

Regards,

Even fitting the largest valves to the standard GTA heads won't reap 25bhp.

The cams that Prima specify are 240degree items.

With proper 270 degree high lift items you could see 280-300 properly, but only with programmable management.

The standard injectors are maxed out on a more or less standard engine running higher boost at around 240bhp. Changing the cams/headwork on a standard ecu will just make it run lean at peak torque/rpm.

Wish you would stop teasing with the "programmable managment" Dave :(
