Hi Lee,
A tip I got from a mate who is an MOT inspector, and backed by various "in the pub" anecdotes....- make sure everything is OK (on the diagnostics box ideally, the port is by your right knee, software about £100 quid, or take it to a specialist) then take it down the road fast, get the cat(s) really hot and then try for a retest? If you have the alp, you may not thrash the daily driver.....
I have a friend who is an MOT tester and swears by this technique....

Incidentally you don't need this for an Alpine. GTA's & pre '92 A610 don't need CATS (are there any still with them?) and post '92 A610's are currently "unlisted" on the Swansea database, meaning you are allowed 3.5% CO- the same as a non cat car. My inspector at the MOT last month told me this- and this was confirmed by my MOT testing mate. The only caveat is this is all "at the moment".
My A610 seems to be the first post '92 car to have a new style MOT- they had to call Swansea and I had a lot of "could it be called anything else" type of questions before they set up a new record. There can't be many post '92 cars (less than 30) so we may all get away with this! Hope so as my CAT is coming off as soon as I get the bypass tube delivered.

You might find it cheaper to get the new cats made by a specialist if this does not work- from my experience of Audi pricing.

Good luck!

Lee

Yup Jamie- you must have done- but they still have no record at Swansea (what kind of MOT station did you go to!!)so its no cats for us!- good for those of us that want to lose the CAT- not so good for the guy trying to sell one in Hampshire.- 120 quid! you can get a new high capcity one for 300 (I'm told).
I'm looking forward to trying mine without one though.

Hi Jamie,
My 610 is a '94 too- when I took it for the MOT I asked how it did on the CAT test- and I was told that the car TYPE had been allocated a 3% CO limit-"so you won't need to worry about the CAT".
I asked him if this meant I could take the CAT off- and he said yes if I wanted to, as it will make the 3% without the CAT.
So....I have a cat bypass tube on order- about £100 from Paul Sage at ARR.
I'll hang onto the CAT in case he changes his mind next year or Swansea has a change of heart and lists the car with a lower limit.
So I recon you can get away with removing your CAT if you want to- or maybe I'm just leading you astray!
I think all the councils that were doing roadside checks have run out of money and given up too.

Cheers

Looking at my emissions test at natural idle they allocated 0.3%vol and the actual value was 0.1% but at fast idle its on the 0.2% limit,I would love to remove the cat but i dont know if i could be bothered putting back on for the MOT every year, can anyone say for sure if we can loose the cat and if so what would we gain by removing it.

And Lee on my MOT they classed the car as a GTA,looking back through the old tests its had quite a few different names, best one was A610 Sport Spider :?
