has anyone tried a piggy back ecu on a gta before :?: i know ultimately it wont be as good as a standalone ecu but i would of thought its the next best thing as it gets rid of boost cuts,fueling can be mapped and so can ignition and you can run nos,water injection etc of it

when my brother had his starlett gtt with a dastek he inquired about an hks power fc and sevaral people told him the gains will be minamal and to stick with what hes got

Anythings possible ,at the end of the day its just another car .I can't see why piggybacking wouldn't work given enought time and MONEY :shock: :lol:

I suspect DG will have the answer and if it could have been done I'm sure he'd have tried it. From what i do know the ECU on the GTA is from the dark ages and makes a ZX Spectrum look like a super computer :lol:

GT5 where is the RR you are going to? When are you going? I would be interested to see if they get results with whatever they are going to do...presumably there will be before and after results to show? Are you planning to buy DG's chargecooler before you go?

im going to noble motorsport http://www.noblemotorsport.co.uk/ on the 15th feb i would have liked davids chargecooler but im skint at the mo just have to hope the nos intercooler spray will bring temps down not sure what power it will get but if i dont get the bigger injectors think i wont get no more than 250bhp so ive been told

Units such as the Dastek on 'normal cars' tap into the throttle pot feed to monitor load, map sensor and TDC signal, so the timing can be modified.

The GTA doesnt have a 5v pot which can be used (as it is a digital switched affair), so that rules out most part throttle and cruising mapping... The air and knock sensor inputs have a multiplier which retards and richens the ignition and mixture too much for safety (this is why the GTA's get low RR readings when hot), and the Piggyback unit has no control over these readings.

So, if you try and shift all the ignition up to compensate, when the engine is not running 'so' hot, there will be too much ignition advance and most likely knock (which kicks in the original knock retard!)

Most places that fit piggyback chips are around £500 so its no even as if its a cheap mod to do initially..

£500.....crikey thats almost as much as a mappable ECU.
GT5.....dont fit bigger injectors!!!! I had 214cc on the car and you could smell the richness and on the RR it was hugely rich and power was down because of it. The standard car has 185. I have 191cc and they are just enough to perk the car up at the top end without drowning it. Check what injectors you have fitted and maybe get them cleaned but dont spend on much bigger ones until you can map the fuelling.

To be honest Dave i was? maybe tempted with the Dastek, out of deperation :cry: With you having Tonys GTA in will it speed things up re; your ECU Dave :?: (think i need some Valium or somthing :) )

What would you estimate the costs of the ecu ending up at with installation & maping :?:

I will try and keep it as cheap as possible, the ecu and loom should be around £600 (probably including fitting and the base map)

Please bear in mind there are costs of other parts though (and you would have the same if a piggy back ecu was used for instance..)

Injectors
3 bar map sensor (you cant run over 1 bar of boost without one)
5v throttle pot and mounting plate
Lambda sensor

Once Tonys car is up and running, I will work out a complete package price for everything needed and a fitted and mapped price if nessecary.

With this ECU, though, once its installed on your vehicle, any decent RR tuner should be able to play with the mapping for you..
