Anyone run their GTA on 4* still?

Postby rogeralpine » Wed Jan 11, 2006 11:16 am

Due to low mileage and access to a couple of garages still selling 4 star, I've been able to continue running my GTA on 4 star (or is it nearly 5 star :) )

Not sure if the day will ever come when I have to switch to unleaded, but what do people recommmend? Does anyone use additives? Is it worth me still buying 4 star - should I make the switch. I presume there's a slight performance hit?

I use shell optimax in my '86 turbo.
It has been run on normal unleadded, seemed ok at the time.

Is Ok on unleaded ,but well worth using an additive ,especially with low mileage

I use this ,but can't find it locally at the moment ,not sure if they've stopped making it

...looks like my local garage has stopped selling 4* so it's either a 40 mile round trip to the next nearest or I move over to LRP or unleaded.

Thanks for the info!

The PRV engine doesn't need lead (designed not to).
On my A310s I use any of the high octane unleaded which definitely makes them run cooler.
The Fed historic vehicles (FHVBRA or something like that) did a lot of testing and research on lead substitutes and decided that only a few worked (none of the 'in tank brickets'!) and that you shouldn't mix diferent ones. Some use phosphates whilst others use sodium etc etc and having 2 of them in the same tank cancels each other out.
On my A110 I used Castrol valvemaster (valvemaster plus also boosts the octane) as it passed their tests and was easily available.

Unleaded

Postby Tony Smith » Wed Jan 11, 2006 2:23 pm

Standard car will run quite happily on bog standard unleaded with little difference in using the high octane (GTA ECU not sophiscated enough to tell to advance your ignition timing!) may run a little smoother/cleaner but certainly not essential. If your running extra boost then its definitely worth using the higher octane fuel as the engine is more liable to pre-det in extreme conditions.

When I use Tesco 99RON my car misfires at maximum rpm (sounds like DTM car!) yet doesn't do this using Optimax or BP Ultimate .

Not sure why this is, maybe the higher octane rating confuses the ECU and runs richer? Any clues?

Yep, its pretty much so...although if I wind the boost up beyond 1bar it will still misfire even with NGKs!!! But then thats probably to do with the fuelling where as the misfire at 1 bar and below must be down to the plugs. Looking at them you can see why the NGKs cost more money they are far more intricate than the Champions which look a little chunky and unsophisticated by comparison.

Mines running Ok at the moment on the champions, colder ,will have to put the NGK's back in and see...........messed about with the CO pot, though it doesn't seem to make that much difference unless it's cranked all the way one way or other  How do you check it without the DG unit :?:
It's showing :?: resistance :?:

The CO pot only effects the car at idle type speeds.....its good for improving the emissions for MOT but thats about it I'm afraid.
