New Engine

Not being mechanically minded, I tend to lose interest when my mechanic starts talking about blocks, heads, pistons and the general workings of the infernal combustion engine, but I do understand when he says it's FUBAR. In short I need a new engine, and he seems to think that a replacement will be cheaper and infinitely easier than repair.

Now I imagine that to source an engine for an 87 GTA Turbo will be quite difficult as I assume they are in rather short supply, so is there any other engine that can go in there without too much difficulty.

What would you recommend and what other alterations would I need to make to facilitate the new engine or are these things just interchangable?

Seriously though, I'd probably look for a Safrane V6 or a Citroen/Peugeot 3.0 V6 24v

Who's your mechanic?

I only ask because there are a lot of garages out there (esp Renault themselves) who'd advise a total replacement of the engine when the work isn't that difficult and certainly still economic.

Paul Sage had an A610 in years ago that had done barely any miles at all but had sat in storage for years. When it was sold and started being used again one of the head gaskets instantly popped - not an amazingly difficult job but Renault wanted to replace the entire engine including the turbo (!?) at an astronomic cost. Paul simply replaced the head gaskets and saved the guy a fortune.

Unless it's one of the specialists I'd advise finding out what the problem is and asking on here before you make the jump.

If not then another PRV V6 or a 21 turbo lump would be the easy choices :wink:

I have a working V6 turbo engine which has been reserved for ages, but the customer still hasnt paid in full yet, so it may be available...

Ill get it contact with him and see what the score is..

As for PRV's, yes, Laguna or Safrane will fit (with relevant exhaust and manifolds), but you wont be able to use the Laguna or Safrane ecu..

These come up quite regularly for between £700-£1000

Alternatives (Renault or PRV)

V6 3 Litre Early Safrane or Laguna From £250 sh - £2500new
V6 3 litre PRV 24V From £500 sh - £9500new
4 Cyl 2 litre R21 Turbo From £150 sh - £2000new

Or if you are feeling more adventurous.

Alternatives (Non Renault)

Rover V8. Bellhousing available and has been done before.
Cosworth 4 Cyl. Bellhousing available

you are all savages! desecrating such a beautiful machine with a rover engine!

These engines are all wet liners and are easily repaired - the hard part is taking it out and replacing it and if you are changing the engine you are going to change the engine youll have to do that anyway. Get it repaired and keep an original car on the road before they are all broken into pieces!

This is supposed to be the alpine renault owners club not the alpine renault rover owners club!!

Personally I would stick with a PRV V6 derivative, preferably the 24V :wink:

I heard that you can get a bell housing for The toyota V8 4.0 litre lump from the Lexus LS400. It aint much larger in size or heavier than the PRV as it is all alloy too.

Cost point of view

if you want to keep the cost to a minimum then sticking with the original engine is the best bet. All the other PRV's don't drop straight in as they are in transverse cars and you will need to rob several parts off your original engine - and all of them are naturally aspirated not turbo. Also a non-original engine will de-value the car and most classic car insurance companies will not insure you either - I had to argue my case big time when I put my Safrane biturbo lump in - even though it looks very similar to the untrained eye. If Davids engine doesn't come through I will have a few quite soon providing current plans come to fruition.
