Oh dear I've gone a bit mad this week!

Postby Tony Smith » Sun Apr 02, 2006 6:12 pm

Well its official my friends are telling me - I am completely mad! Bought 6 (six!) cars this week which even I think is a bit obsessive! Good news is though 2 Alps amongst them. :D .

Start with th worst first - Renault 11 Turbo in black as a donar car for Phase 1 5 GT Turbo in electric blue which needs an engine.

Then 2 x 25 V6 turbos which I'm hoping to make a good car out of the pair and have a engine and box etc spare which can be used in the GTA.

Then 1981 A310 in metallic black in fantastic condition with loads of new parts - and loads of good upgrades. Has Spax adjustable coilovers, bigger brake calipers front and rear. Genuinely one of the best A310's in the country.

Image

Lastly I've managed, thanks to Paul at ARR, to get my hands on the twin turbo unfinished project that I briefly mentioned a few weeks back. This is a really interesting and unique car.

Image

Image

Wide arch kitted body with different front and rear bumpers and full vented rear glass etc (anybody know what the kit is?) Inside is pretty standard. Haven't checked to see if the brakes or suspension are uprated yet. In the back sits what looks like a brand new PRV possibly uprated internally but this needs investigation.

Image

Has a completely fabricated inlet manifold with twin plenums - one for each of the twin T2 turbos sitting on custom manifolds down each side of the engine. Intercoolers are mounted high up under the back engine cover. What it doesn't have is any ancillaries on the engine or a loom or any plumbing for the turbos. Runs on Fagix split rims that have proper machined ally spacers on to help them fill the arches. Car had been a project at Green Light Tuning in Brixton for many years with allegedly £20K plus spent on it. The owner unfortunately died and Green Light Tuning went bankrupt. I believe the car has sat at a college somewhere (indoors) ever since. Has only done about 40K and is in pretty tidy condition.

I'm looking for confirmation from you guys that I'm just a normal bloke as many of my non-car enthusiast friends now think I'm turning into some car obsessive freak!

Congratulations, .......I thought you were going to say you were getting maried.

What would you think of a man that bought 6 shirts or a woman that bought 6 pairs or shoes in a week. Probably not much. They just won't need to go shopping next week.

It's what you buy next week that could get you condemed though.
Watch out for yellow vans driven by men in white overalls.

Not sure about mad...possibly more money than sense, or too much time on your hands
Have you got any cars that arent partially finished projects??
I like the sound of the A310...is it that one that ARR has had in for a while?
The GTA sounds like it will probably turn out well.....but also a nightmare as its an untried unfinished project.

More money than sense!

Postby Tony Smith » Sun Apr 02, 2006 6:47 pm

God I wish that was the case. In truth got everything at good prices - especially the GTA. But have several cars that are finished - Skyline, the A310 is 100% complete and up and running and the black GTA is finished when Davids ECU is fitted although I'm getting concerned that its taking so long. Track car is running and isn't a million miles away from being finished but I've hit a snag with seats. With fixed back bucket seats my head hits the roof with a crash helmet on! So I need to investigate a side mounted seat that I can alter the angle of.

A310

Postby Tony Smith » Sun Apr 02, 2006 6:49 pm

Oh and yes the A310 is the one they have had at ARR for a while. I've asked Steve to post some pics of the GTA on the thread for me

tony, can you just jack up the front of the seat to give it some rake?
would need some special spacers maybe.

Says the guy that was made to wait nearly 2 years for an engine to be fitted by someone else   ....and I'm doing all the ecu work for free!, even though its costing me a small fortune for the benefit of everyone else... :?

..but if your going to do something, you do it right the first time. :D

As for the seats, you won't gain anything going sidemount, they are just as deep. As Simon said, you need to rake the seat back slightly, PeterG has a couple in his trackcar, Ill get some pics up..

Have you had a cage fitted to the track car yet? I always liked the look of that A310....if I knew then what I know now I might have bought it instead of my GTA.
What shape are the 25 turbos in???

Re - your questions

Postby Tony Smith » Mon Apr 03, 2006 12:26 pm

The 5 GT Turbo - Looking to get it back up and running with a proper engine in (nothing to lairy probably 160-170bhp). Some new seats in the front - might use the buckets destined for the GTA, no back seats. Probably going to run it on 16v Clio ph1 15" rims as I have a polished set of these in the garage.

The 25's are a black phase 1 and a white phase 2 both complete, been stored in a barn for a few years, they both look ok on the surface but until there delivered I won't get a true picture. I just figured they were worth having regardless for the GTA parts in them.

I thought about the seat mounting and just tilting the one end of the seat but it will mean where the bolts pass through the floor won't be square which can't be a good thing. I thought the side mounted buckets could be adjusted by using the additional bolt holes they seem to have.

On the standard mounts my seats are virtually on the floor anyway...have maybe an inch of clearance at the back. I'm 5'10" and my helmet touches the roof if I dont sit quite far back and right into the seat so its gonna be very hard. I suggest you maybe try getting Caterham style fibreglass seats and side mounts, together you might gain a couple of inches and the fibreglass seats will be very light and can be made comfortable with a bit of padding.
I like the front of the GTA and the rear spoiler (the chav in me is coming out.....BLING!! ) but the whole faired in thing at the back is a bit suspect in my opinion...it will be interesting to see what you can do with that engine. Will you have it ready before David finishes his twin turbo GTA???? The race is on :D !

I'd be worried if I'd had known that
Seriously though your brain must be the size of a planet to retain all this info.
Don't know if I want Ford bits on my car though - are those intercoolers any good?
