Thank you all. In the cold light and mist of the Kentish morning and a fretful sleep with many bad dreams, I remembered I had had work done on the rear 1/4 5/6 weeks ago (thanks Darren ) and yes it was the bolts I was in danger of loosing a wheel very embarrasing. How does the gta go on 3 wheels???????

if you've damaged the threads on the bolts....... Change em it will only be a cheap oversight then.... leave them and disaster could strike when you see that wheel passing you on the motorway

Did you do it yourself, or a garage? Either way, you were lucky you didnt kill yourself..

I'd take a good look at your wheel bolts and replace them with new ones anyway if they're the originals. I had a couple of mine snap a year or two back whilst having new tyres fitted. Had to have one drilled out.

On a slightly different note and touching on David's comment about wheel safety, I had a new rear tyre fitted to my Peugeot yesterday and it came off the rim whilst I'm doing about 70 down the motorway! I went back this afternoon to have them check and refit it, obviously non too pleased!

Check, refit and supply new rubber all round foc Arses ,how the feck do they get away with it

King-hell, that has got to be worth reporting to trading standards, National Tyre fitters guild and also letting watchdog know about it.

I took it back, they re-inflated it and put it in the bath to check and said it was indeed leaking air from the rim! They reckoned it had been deflating through the leak as I was driving and when the pressure got so low it reached a point where it came away from the rim and went flat completely! Not really what you want driving along the motorway! I got it fixed and some advice to 'see how it goes' over the next couple of days. Oh and an apology.

Maybe I should have pushed it further but as long as I'm not dead... (Although, I'm yet to 'see how it goes' )

You may have to be dead for a certain amount of time before you can file a claim though...

I drove to and from work today being somewhat more than usually attentive to what the car was doing during cornering!

And with good reason as it turns out. Looked out the window a few minutes ago and the tyre was flat again! Just put the spare on but will have to use the GTA tomorrow and take the tyre back after work.

It must be their dodgy crap Kleber branded tyre. They said themselves the rim was fine and the tyre they took off was a Michelin that had been on for years (probably from new) without any problems. I only changed it because it had a nail in it, which they could have repaired but, like I said, the tyre was old and the sidewall was looking a bit second hand with a few cracks and splits like the tread might come away! So I changed it as a precaution. With hindsight, maybe I should have left it alone to soldier on!

I fear I'm too laid back and haven't really the temperament for a rant!

But I will see what their attitude is like. It seems to me the tyre is obviously defective and they should try a new one.

Kleber have been around for years and (in my experience) are reasonable tyres. Having said that, the reason Michelin are so expensive is that their quality control is the best in the business whereas Kleber may not be...
