Running out of puff

Postby LiamMcShane » Fri Apr 28, 2006 9:54 am

Noticed it before, but never really bothered me. When I rev the car out in second gear there is a noticable tail off in power at about 5000 rpm and the car stops revving (as though it's starved of fuel). Any ideas?? :?

Quoted rev limit 6100 rpm (or have I been mis-informed?)

From my experience there's no point trying to rev an A310 over 5k. They run out of puff there :(

Mine does not bounce off the limiter till 6,300, but by then you have left the power curve and you are on the down side.

Rev Limits

Postby Tony Smith » Sat Apr 29, 2006 5:39 pm

There are 2 different rev-limits I've been told (on turbos anyway) 6100 being the norm but apparently there are some cars set at 6300. I had to eat humble pie over this many years ago as I was adamant it was 6100! Although its a bit pointless on the standard car as all the power has gone by then anyway

The rev limit is 6100, I have checked various cars on my diagnostic.

They all show higher on the tach than the true reading from the ECU.

So now we've established that it should rev to 6100 rpm, does anyone have any idea as to what might cause mine to die over 5000??????

Turbo, exhaust, fueling, intake heat....

Get it checked on a RR first just to check there are no obvious problems (such as running lean through knackered pump or regulator), and if not, its usually the restrictive exhaust and turbo..

Once you sort them it pulls right up to the limiter.. :D

actually 6300 in all gears except top when it drops to 6100

should have no problem hitting limit - most likely fuel starvation - check fuel pressure, delivery and pressure regulator to see if vacuum operating correctly - have you changed a fuel filter recently?

also Liam I have found the photos!!! will bring disc for next meet which must be now due!

Curious. My A610 has the same problem that it is perfect up to around 5300 and then wont go up to the 6300 temp / 6100 max. This causes no problems in normal driving but is a nuisance when fast overtaking as you have to change up earlier than would be ideal. I am having it checked on a RR next week but the DG advice was that it is probably running out of fuel at high revs. I will report back once it has been diagnosed.
Driving an A610 is just so sublime.
