suspension

Postby gt5 » Tue May 16, 2006 2:57 pm

[img][/img]

can someone please tell me if this is the correct order that the suspension parts should come off or if there is anything missing?

the other day when i came back from the petrol station i could hear the front suspension clunking/banging around so i popped the bonnet open and the suspension rods had pushed right through to my bonnet  there was also loads of rubber shavings sat around the strut but i cant seem to see where it has come from everything looks ok its as if something is missing so its allowing the rod to slide right through  :x :(

Might this explain your earlier 'front end bounce'?
I'm just here for the gasoline.

Sure theres somthing missing (as on the pic)( Lee: Bonnet side, nut, nut, steel washer ,rubber gromet, steel washer ) if thats right theres a steel washer missing? Still got a feeling theres somthing missing on the arch side :?: The pic is in order how it came off :? but what should be there to stop the shock rod coming through the top mount (Large steel disc with the bolts) :? :? :?

There's a step down in the rod to the thread diameter .Can't remember if there's another washer/gromet arch side or it's the big plate that retains it .
Looking again at your pic ,the mushroom ,3rd left metal/rubber item might go arch side methinks :?:

Yes, this is the reason why youve been having problems, and it wasn't the bloody suspension all along! :?

Basically, as your car is going up and down on the springs, instead of the damper rod going up and down in the shock, it has just been pushing up and down through the rubber top mount. In fact, the harder you stiffened the shocks, the easier it would have pushed through...

Im suprised you havent punched a hole through your bonnet

The shock rod has a step in it. This step sits against a bottom washer, then the bush (with metal insert inside), then topmount, then bush, then washer, then nuts.

It should be the same as the top ,it just needs to have a close fit to the thread diameter and be large-ish on the OD .If the top one you've got is OK ,put that on the archside and see  Get down B&Q and get some to go topside .

this is the reason why we have qualified mechanics

the more have-a-go-heros there are working on their cars then the greater the chance for sometime to go very wrong.

count yourself lucky gt5, that you did not have a serious crash due to your mechanical incompetence.

rant over.
