count yourself lucky gt5, that you did not have a serious crash due to your mechanical incompetence.

rant over.

The reason for have-a-go heroes is the extortionate hourly rate charged by qualified mechanics  For fu##s-sake it's not as if they've got 7 years student loans to pay back

Presumably when you took the old suspension off there were 2 washers left over?? Or has your suspension always been 'crashy'???

Simon.....mistakes are how people learn!!! What he did was hardly life threatening....just car threatening :D

Oh , I think it was a bit dangerous  Perhaps not if you're only in it for 40 secs on a hillock :D but doing a ton down the bypass

I've dismantled these before and found only one washer.

Yes the parts fiche only shows one washer for each side.

Also the reassembly section (suspension) in the workshop manual also only shows one washer both front and rear.

However it would appear to be common sense that you need two each side unless we are all missing something obvious!

Perhaps you could explain what the dangers? As far as I can see, other than damaging the bonnet (there is so little movement in the set up that it wouldnt even pop the bonnet as the catch system is very robust) the danger is nil.....the suspension wont work as well as it should but its not going to come off the car as its attached top and bottom and the springs are still captive.

No :!: can't be bothered  Undampened suspension at high speeds and cornering ,you've obviously never lost control of a Space Hopper in a big way  Or all the roads you drive on are as smooth as a Brazilian

I had a garage forget to reconnect a rear damper so just one corner was sprung but not damped! I practically bounced off the road round one fast corner with a hump in it

Undamped suspension is really very dangerous, especially if you hit the resonant frequency of the spring due to a series of bumps. You'll hop like a gangsta rapper in LA!

That bonnet's tougher than it looks though isn't it. Pete surely you don't need all that in built strength in your quest for lightness?

Resonant frequency

Postby Tony Smith » Wed May 17, 2006 11:15 am

Ny friends Gordini used to have this problem with his torsion bars! If you drove in the inside lane of the motorway at about 60 mph and the lane was badly rutted from the lorries so 1 wheel was in the dip after a few minutes the whole car used to shake and bounce about - really weird. The only way to make it stop once it started was to pull up on the hard shoulder and stop the car . It then instantly stopped and then you could drive off straight away no problem.

Darren, Ive already looked at the bonnet and considered attacking it.....the problam is there are some handy things attached to the inner skin of it (its 2 pieces glued together as far as I can tell) like the struts and hinges. Then theres the circle shape that seals the rubber neck of the fuel tank...the scrutineers always have a long hard look at the set up of the fuel tank because its under the bonnet and I'd probably find out I needed it if I got rid (the head scrutineer at Teesside had me blowing into the fuel filler cap to prove to him it wasnt vented....I bet no one else here has given their GTA a blow job!!! )

Oh I don't know some people are very attached to their cars and their a funny lot on here :?

Back to the point I know what you're saying. What I wondered was more like taking the bonnet off and using it as a mould to create a newer lighter version. Full carbon-fibre would be cool and be ultra light weight but probably 300+ quid, if you had the liner made up in carbon too you'd save a lot of weight.

Wasn't there talk of a carbon fibre rear bumper at some point?

I thought it was vented, which is why some cabins have a whiff of fuel in then.... a vented tank, under the bonnet, where the blower is constantly flowing air into the cabin. Hardly surprising that there is a whiff of fuel?
