Insurance time again!

Postby LiamMcShane » Mon Jun 05, 2006 10:06 am

Just recently got my renewal quote for my car, and it's up from £500 to £750  with Hall & Clarke so I'm now looking elsewhere! :P

Got a reasonable quote from AON for £406 (fully comp, 5000 miles, agreed value £8000), but just wondering if there's any others I should try. :?:

I just went with the new Norwich Union Collectors Policy.

http://www.norwichunion.com/car-insuran ... urance.htm

Great value.

£152 fully comp. Agreed Value £6500. Free RAC Recovery.
Central London. NCD not required. £150 excess. £50 glass.

The downsides:

3000 miles limit
Foreign use £21 extra per 8 day period.

Forgot to add. When you phone up after the online quote, your telephone quote may even cheaper as there are extra discounts they can apply. Mine was around £25 less.

Don't want to sound like the party pooper but low quotes and added bells and whistles are all well and good, but before taking out a policy it's worth doing extra research to find out what the service is like, should you ever have to make a claim. I learnt this from experience when I had to make a claim on my GTA last year.

There's no guarantee my new insurer will be any better than the last but at least I know who I wont be using again!

I agree to a certain extent. Paying too little is as bad or perhaps worse than paying too much (see Mr Ruskin quote below). From experience I find if you stick with the same company for several years then they tend to reward your loyalty by stuffing your premium up.
Pays to look around every two years.

"There's hardly anything in this world that some man cannot make a little worse and sell a little cheaper and the people who consider price alone are this man's lawful prey, as it is unwise to pay too little as it is too much.

When you pay too much you lose a little money that is all. When you pay too little you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the things it was bought to do.

The common law of business balance prohibits paying too little and getting a lot. It cannot be done.

If you deal with the lowest bidder it is well to add something for the risk you run. And if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better"

John Ruskin. 1819 - 1900

That's exactly what AON did. Presumably as agents for Royal & Sun Alliance they add a percentage for themselves.

Can't forsee any problems with Norwich Union.

Just no brokers or middlemen so cheaper direct.

If I can pay £150 then there's no way I'm staying & paying £250+

I managed to get AON to take another £40 off because the competition was cheaper, but AON did remove the limited milage because my car is having its 20th birthday this year, which the competition could not do.

Paid £148.20 including tax and "claims service" (????) It was £168 the previous year.

Complete BullS**t. A brokers commision comes from the company for the extra paperwork that the broker does, not from the customer. The company still have to do the paperwork and therefore have to charge for it. What's more they are usually so poor at it (compared to the broker) that it costs them even more.

One other point to remember, it does make a big difference on the type of policy you’re after. For instance a limited mileage, classic car, 2nd car type insurance will be cheaper than a limited mileage, ‘commuting to & from work' one.

Complete BullS**t

Not necessarily, to get a true price comparison you would have to select a number of brokers who are likely to have driven good deals with the insurers and the main direct insurance companies.

In my case the brokers were unable to offer the same level of discount that Norwich Union could when I dealt with them direct.

So depends on how good your broker is... None of them could get anywhere near for me.

Great deal. So also depends on who you get on the phone! If they had given me that figure they would have kept my business this year!
