Clutch shenanigans!

The final straw in the clutch fiasco at Elvington sprint today was when I decided to examine the linkage from the pedal to master cylinder. The rod clips onto the pedal then goes into what appears to be a metal washer which holds in the other end of the rod which has a kind of ball on it. The washer is held in by a circlip. I removed the circlip as there was a small amount of play in the rod and hey presto!!! Fluid leaked into the car and the spring popped out of the cylinder :shock: Managed to get it back together, but I have a feeling its not meant to be like that! Can anyone confirm???

I can confirm I have no fluid spilling into the car and no washers or springs in the drivers footwell. Does that help???
But I do have a work pedel/linkage pin and there is a about an inch of free-air travel on the cluth pedal at the top of it's travel.

Let us know what else you find.

I only had the fluid and spring when I removed the circlip of the metal thing that holds the rod in place.....I assumed that it only held the rod in and not the whole innards of the damn master cylinder :evil:
I have some free play as the pedal is worn.....and because the rod isnt wedged in at the master cylinder end....which is what I was looking at yesterday.

My clutch pedal had a lot of free play in it when I got the car cos the pin and the hole that it goes through in the pedal were badly worn. I just replaced the pin with a nut and bolt, and welded two washers to either side of the pedal to make the hole right again. Is that what you're talking about? If not then I have no idea! :lol:

Have that as well...nut its not really what I was talking about!!! Good news is I had the engine and box out in 3 hours and split with the clutch off in 4!!! Fitting another new clutch, but it would appear the problem is down to the pressure plate not being as tight as it ought to. It will be back together by tomorrow night....I am an Alpine mechanic god!! :wink: :D :D :D

Don't get cocky :) ' fitting another new clutch' :lol: if you was a god it would have been right the first time :wink: Big up though 8) 8)
Clutch change = 8 hours, being very generous to the professionals .At £50/hour thats only ....................................................

Its done! What a difference. Reverse just slots in and the pedal bites half way up. Soooooo pleased :D It hasnt been right since I fitted the clutch last year. The pedal is nice and light and while I had it to bits I painted virtually the whole chasis fitted new rear roll bar mounts and wrapped avery bare cm of exhaust!

Another worthwhile upgrade is to bin the soggy GTA gearbox mount and fit the firmer A610 version. (Cheaper too :D ).

Has helped me to get reverse easily for the first time in years!

Same goes for the engine mounts.

Also if you haven't already done so, swop the rubber gear selector UJ for the nylon version.

Too late! Handy tips are handier before doing a job :lol: I'm happy with what Ive got at the minute...it will be next times upgrade!!!!

You can change the gearbox mount fairly easily anytime if you have access to a lift. While it's off you can do the u/j as well.

Mine looked OK but behaved like Stretch Armstrong when it had any load on it!
