A610 Gearbox

Could someone please advise authoritatively on whether you fill these gearboxes (used in A610, Venturi etc) up to the oil filler hole or merely put a set amount in. Mine leaks heavily from the driveshaft seals when it is filled to this filler level. I am told it is being overfilled (by the garage that sold me the car...surprise surprise), whilst others tell me the seals are knackered. Anybody any thoughts?

It is 3 litres, but you normally just fill the box till it starts coming out of the filler on a LEVEL surface.

I recently refilled my GTA turbo box while it was out of the car. 3 litres took the level just to the filler hole.

Got this from the Oilman along with all his other recommendations :lol:
Don't know how to judge it really :? but the engine oil he suggested seems top notch and my box is stiil in one piece

Call me stupid, but how difficult is it to top up the gearbox oil? It doesn't look very accessible. :? I've a feeling mine needs topping up judging by the copious amounts of oil on the outside of my gearbox casing, rather then on the inside where it would seem to be more needed! :roll: :(

on my 21 turbo has blown driveshaft oil seals, they are about £12 each, not a lot of money and easy enough to change on a 21 I cant imagine it being harder to pull the shafts at the rear end ?

siGTA ....21 bit just dropped off :lol:

Its a pain in the ass. You need to use a transfer pump, suck it up, pump it in - cover your arms in oil :lol:

Shame Renault couldnt have fitted a remote filler pipe with a filler somewhere in the engine bay. Wouldnt be that difficult to knock up, just get a union made to fit the box with some 6mm pipe connected to it, and bring it up somewhere accessible. Would take a while to fill though...

Juzz, my box "was" covered in oil but I think most of it was spillage from the last person who topped it up.

You need to fill it from under the car, which can be hard. the fill plug is on the side of the box. In the past I have filled a box using an old pump-action soap dispensor. Obviously it needs to be well cleaned out first. Filled with box oil you insert the soap spout into the filler hole and pump the bottle up and down, the oil will go into the box.

The workshop manual and UN1 manual says that the gearbox oil must be GL5.

It's been said a thousand times about sealing the roll pins in but I'll say it again "seal the roll pins in" lol, done the drive shaft seals and new roll pins on my 610's box a while back now and it's never so much as dripped a drop since :D filling the box was easy with an adapted sealey preasure brake fluid changing device, the car was sat level on the ground and took the whole 3ltrs no problem :D

Thanks for the tips. Sounds like a right pain in the bum. Surely you must need a garage pit to be getting underneath to do it with it sat on level ground? Good job I'm slim! :)

You could try modifying your GTA so that you can get at the Gbox from inside the car .... Like on the A310! 8)

no pit required just the bleeder with a long hose connected to it, you can pump it in with it sitting next to the car :wink:

No pit required, just take the box out, with engine too of course.
OR,
put the car up on 4 ramps, figure that one out. (I should have taken a picture).

We've got a special tool for filling the gearbox.... it's a 500ml ATF bottle with the pointy squirter on the end, bottom cut off attached to 1.5m of clear hose. Poke it into the filler and run the hose up through the engine bay and use it like a funnel. It takes a while but it does work very well. There's no real harm in filling it up with the car on tilted towards the back, you'll just squeeze another half litre or so in. 75W90 as standard if memory serves. Motaquip GL4&5 in a 5 litre can is more than enough. The seals can be a sod when it comes to knocking the new ones in, and check whether the "collar" on the driveshaft is pitted. A decent machine shop should be able to heat-shrink a polished sleeve to the shaft to make a new shiny surface - in fact the ones available for the DeLorean should fit - it's the same seal after all.
