Smoking Problem

No it's not a Benson and Hedges Habit, my GTA had a problem yesterday as it left a huge plume of burnt oil type smoke behind me under load which even came into the cabin, thought I was on fire! After passing it's MOT and sorting out my misfire problem I am starting to use it more but this only happens when you really give it some :twisted:

I'm hoping it's my turbo as it seems to smoke on idle now and again so I thought it was on it's way out, hope it's not terminal! It doesn't seem to smoke when you come off boost though as this is usually a sign of turbo?? Normal driving seems fine as well...

Any other ideas at all?

Check by pulling off the breather pipes from the turbo inlet, and see how much of a haze you are getting from them at idle. That would indicate a heavy breathing engine..but, smoking at idle could indicate the beginning of worn seals on the turbo too...

After a quick look just now there seems to be some burnt oil residue on the downpipe/manifold, could this have caused the smoke under pressure?? I can't really see any oil leaks apart from the back of the dizzy cap, could oil be leaking from somewhere else in the engine bay under high pressure then this being burnt off on the manifold??

You probably had some oil come out the dipstick tube :lol: Mine has a habit of doing that ,Simon T to I believe .

Blimey! It could be, does it only happen when you really plant the right foot clee?

Can I stop this happening if this is the case? My oil level is just above the minimum so I need to top up really!

Yes :lol: I fitted a small breather filter on the tube end but that just got full of oil :lol: so it's back to normal now .It isn't doing it much now so must be down to levels .
Could be the old two diff length DS tubes and I'm overfilling it ,dunno .Will take carefull measurements next full change .

Mine only spill out the top of the dip stick tube after a hard righthander on a small roundabout, or a frantic fishtail. I wouond a bit of cloth round the top of the tube to catch the oil rather than let it flow down onto the exhaust manifold. It was VERY spectacular the first time it happened, I thought it may have caught fire.

Having already been in a fireball on the M6 last year due to an oil leak (faulty oil feed pipe on a 21 Turbo) I would like to sort this and "uncross" my fingers whilst driving...

I do remember a little "O" ring falling onto the floor when I first chicked the oil via the dipstick a year ago and it seemed to come from there, would that make any difference?

Also by using the wonderfull search facility on the website people have had problems with the breather system (sorry DaveG you did say about heavy breathing). What do I need to check or clean to avoid a blockage?

I checked my breather system ,remove pipes ,blow through, swilled the catch tank out with parrafin ,it was all clear in anyway but .............
What oil are you using :?:

Are these pipes all on the right hand side of the engine bay?

Mobil 1 15 50 fully synthetic.

Hmmmmm, that was one of worries, that it would work like a flaming torch, but actually it works rather well and just smokes very slightly.

Been a while on this :lol:

Took the GTA out for a spin to the golf course on Sunday and it did the same thing again, not as bad as before(I have cleaned the breather system) but oil still came out of the dipstick and burned on the manifold. Caused a right stink!

Anyone else having problems or know what else causes it?
