As we're going for analogies here's a popular one for insurance brokers:

Going to a direct insurer is like going to a baker, you simply get its cheapest. Brokers are more like supermarkets, they stock a range of loaves who’s price depends on their relationship with the supplier.

Stephen, your confusing a broker that either has poor ability or was too busy to do a 'proper job' with saving money. Although I don't do motor or household, I've been an underwiter for the insurance companies and a broker at various times of my life and I can assure you that going direct does not save money.

Your baker comparison does not fit as once a loaf of bread is manufactured any additional cost is transport & shop costs, whereas insurance is not manufactured. It's the result of actuaries calculating risk from historic and known data. The info logging and paperwork is a set cost and doesn't change whoever does it and there's no transport costs.

Most companies will give the broker the same deal if he's doing his job correctly but a few companies that give a better discount for you directly do so because they can either save a bit of costs by using an office in india (which isn't worth the few pounds saved when compared to the agro that it adds when it goes wrong), or they sell your info onwards (mainly to sister companies but not always)

"AZEV wheels are as good as a factory option, the oly other factory that provides the right fitting as standard". Perhaps this will pasify them a bit. Also explain about the price of low profile 15 inch tyres against the low cost of 17 inch tyres these days. They are only human and should understand why you like your AZEV wheels. Also, any one that upgrades their car and shows it respect is more likely to drive with extra care and look after it and keep it in a safe place, so reducing the likelyhood of any claims.

Insure the car.

Send pictures with the standard wheels fitted.

Then send pictures of your new wheels later!

I learnt this from experience when I had to make a claim on my GTA last year.

There's no guarantee my new insurer will be any better than the last but at least I know who I wont be using again!

i couldnt agree more i have just recieved my car back from the garage after repairs from an accident that took place on the 31st May 05 (liability accepted by 3rd party immediatley). This was down to there incompetence & amazing ability to pass the buck! I wont be going with a little red phone on wheels again thats a cert. As you say no guarantee's but once bitten twice shy!

Insurance

Postby BIG_MVS » Wed Sep 13, 2006 12:43 pm

Just had my renewel through from Carole Nash of £380 was £320 last year :? Why does their insurance have to go up instead of down every year

Could not get cover with Norwich Union as I have had a claim and 2 speeding offences in the last 3 years.

AON quoted £304 inc Roadside recovery.

Then tried Classicline and got a quote of £166  This was fully comp, 3000 miles a year, £100 excess and £50 windscreen with an agreed value of £6k. Dink Dank Doo as they say up north :D

I find this hard to believe! I'm pretty sure it wasn't in your GTA at least! :P

Seriously though, sounds like a good deal on your insurance. I recently renewed mine with Classicline. Fully comp, agreed value £6k, 5000 miles a year, and I paid £295.

 Yes I have been doing a bloody good impression of James May (Captain Slow) recently in the Alpine, more out of lack of confidence rather than worrying about more points on my license!

Yes was really pleased with the quote, have you had good service/any problems with them Justin?

No, I've had no problems with them so far. I went over my agreed mileage of 3000 last year. They didn't charge me for it but I did increase it this year to 5000 which cost me an extra £66 on my renewal quote.

Just wondering which insurance brokers/company's are coming out tops this year regarding quotes? i got a really good one from Norwich Union direct, but as soon as i mentioned the car was lowered they didn't want to know  , they was quoting £250, Classic Line are coming in at £303 with AON at £430 they do cover track days   with a high access though  . Now I'm getting old at 25  i suppose the quotes are OK ish
