No its not ready.....the liners are leaking water, so I'm going to do the job myself this time....properly!

Now I have several months to rebuild the engine properly I am would really like to replace the pistons with new versions. The problem is no one seems to stock GTA pistons as a set on their own. Everyone quotes sets with liners at around £800.....which would be ok but having talked to a couple of people at Kames today I got all sorts of scare stories about the liners needing machined to sit at the right height and how it wasnt as straight forward as buying them and fitting them.
The second consideration is to fit forged pistons on their own (my current liners appear fine and I know they sit in the block ok).....I could get Sierra Cosworth pistons as mentioned and get them machined....but which ones do I need? Both of the companies listed earlier on in this thread have many different sets for them.

Ideas please? (sensible ones....LEE!!!!!!)

The reasons the liners come with the pistons is that they are matched at the factory. It's not made particularly obvious in the Renault manaul but there are size codes on the liners in the form of one two or three notches.

I've only ever seen two-notch liners on all the 91 and 93mm engines I've taken apart anyway!

I've seated liners in something like 5 engines now and haven't met a set that didn't fit. It's a bloody tedious task!

I've been looking at pistons recently. The cosworth pistons are talked about because they are 93mm diameter and therefore correct for the 3 litre engines.

I have two Z7U engines waiting for new homes :-)

peter, i'm with stunned monkey on this one, a new block and bottom end will be the way forward for a quick fix. however, as it is a hobby car you'll spend hours learning a hell of a lot if you do it yourself and the satisfaction will be endless. it's a hard choice.

Simon, Ive already learned a hell of a lot!!!!! The only thing I dont know really is about seating the liners. Why are they so tedious to do. Surely if they dont need machining they will slot straight in with their pistons???

Because the old block will not be perfect ,shiney and new like the liners and it's been rebuilt badly by the sounds of it before .

Read the manual you can download off this site. You have to clean up the liner seats to the poinf of being able to eat your dinner off them, but without and scratches or they will leak. I've found a way I'm happy with and they come up lovely. When you pull the old liners out, you'll see what a mess thay get into. You then have to seat and re-seat each liner umpteen times until you get the height perfect above the edge of the block. You then have to seat the one next to it fractionally lower, and so on working to a max and min height. It's a nightmare. You have to buy a load of liner seals of which you'll throw most away. At least the 3 litre engines come with metal gaskets originally and the seats stay prett ymuch perfect, but the 91mm blocks had paper and they'r ehorrid after 20 odd years!

Surely the liners will only seat in one place at one height? The have a flat bottom and are seating onto a flat surface (once cleaned off).....they are also 'top hat' type so they slot in.
