you guys are amazing thanks for all the info... unfortunately having scoured this site for hours i changed my mind and picked up a turbo this morning. WOW! Fast but smelly (petrol) will be giving it a serious looking at the weekend but so far id say it needs the following:

New Brakes (Pads and Discs)
Various Internal Bulbs
The old ART Boost Kit (can a complete idiot of a musician like me fit it?)
Tyres re-balanced (i set them 25psi front, 30 rear ok?)
Passenger handle not operational
Washer Bottle Light on permenantly
etc etc
Im so chuffed though, let me know when your all up at ACE and ill see if i can make it.
Thanks again
Jon

Let me know what you find with the fuel smell

How does the performance compare to the ATMO then? I had an ATMO first but was dissapointed with the performance, you just can't beat that turbo surge in your back 8)

What year/colour GTA Turbo have you bought out of interest, any pics?

If you send me your email address, I can forward the installation details for the chip/boost kit.

You really want to set the tyres to about 28/34.

All I'll say is that I watched it being tuned, and have been out in it as both a passenger and a driver. Even at 8psi the thing is staggeringly quick. Paul Sage reckons if it's slower than the Venturi 400GT he looks after, it ain't by much

It went off the rollers at 240 at the wheels at 5000rpm which is 300 at the flywheel allowing for 60hp loss in the transmission. It needed a further 20% of fuel to get it up to 6000 on the road. You do the maths :-)

And THAT was at a bar of boost. The turbo will do more and Tony will probably have a play if/when he works out his boost controller :-D

Its all in theory! It took a whole day of tuning to get Tony's car to 240bhp, and the transmission loss hasnt been calculated. Adding about another 60bhp to its proven figure because you think it feels fast and you believe theres more to come.....you really ought to know better, thats the stuff of pub boasting! Presumably its ok for me to claim I have a 300+bhp GTA as well then?

The general consensus among both Lotus and Alpine people I've spoken to reckon on 60hp loss in a UN1. We -know- it went off the scale still accellerating at 240 at the wheels and it took another 20% of fuel to get it up to 6000rpm on the road. So it's fairly easy to assume 20% more fuel roughyl equals 20% more power. But no, it's not proven.

What is definitely true is that it's noticably faster than my business partner's PROVEN 276 flywheel hp Esprit. And no, we haven't been racing, Tony wouldn't let me :D

No...

It made 240bhp at 5000rpm.

That equates to 252lb/ft at the same revs...

It is a known trait of this engine that the torque curve of the V6 will be going DOWNWARDS from 4k onwards, even on a cammed engine, so the torque after 5000rpm will be LESS than 252lb/ft

So, if it was 240lb/ft at 5500 the power would be 250bhp at 5500rpm..

If it made 220lb/ft at 6000 the power would still be 250bhp at 6000rpm..

The only way the car could make 360bhp, was if the torque curve defied all physics and went back up again...

And adding '20% more fuel' means diddly, engines make more power running lean at top end than running rich.
