Dodgey electrics???

Postby spryboy1974 » Fri Oct 27, 2006 6:35 pm

Just a few quick questions to fire at you.

The wipers on my GTA have decided to stop parking when you turn them off,i have to anticipate when to turn the switch to off in order for them to park properly!???

Both the OS side lights have stopped working and also all the dash and consul illumination???

Any help would be great,cheers.

the side lights are on seperate left and right 'sided' fuses... so a check on the fuse should sort that.
Wipers, I had the same problem, just undid all the connectors, cleaned them and it was okay. Can't promise the same for you though.

Dodgey electrics

Postby spryboy1974 » Fri Oct 27, 2006 7:00 pm

I knew i would forget something!

The speedo isn't working correctly. It doesn't spring into life until about 25mph and i have yet to get it to go above 80mph. I take it that flat out in 4th is way more than this!!

Can anyone give me a rough idea of the speeds in 5th gear per 1000rpm so that i don't go past any cameras too fast!!!!!

I had this exact same problem last winter, seemed to clear itself when the warmer weather came, have you got any damp problems. Most probably a dodgy EARTH!

1) check your earths

2) do a search on here for speedo problems and you'll find lots of answers.

5th gear is ~ 25mph / 1000rpm. But depends on the tyres / wheels you're running.

Anyway 2000 rpm is ~ 50, 3000 ~ 75 and 4000 ~ 100 mph. It's a fraction more in theory (26 mph /1000) but as I said who's counting.
I'm just here for the gasoline.

Dash illumination failure on mine was down to the dimmer on the underside of the steering coumn. Easily fixed........i wired round it! Its worth a try....it just pops out from under the column and unplugs.
Your speedo not working properly means youre in the majority not the minority I think. Mine works when it feels like it.....which is about 1/2 the time!

Found a blown fuse which was causing OS side light and dash light failure.
As of yet not sorted wiper fault. Have checked all connections which are good. I suppose there may be a relay/timer somewhere or even a limit switch in the motor???

Rupert, would be good to meet up sometime just let me know!

Window wiper park is on a separate fuse - constant live and not through the window wiper switch/relay. Check that you have 12v at the red wire going into the multiplug at the wiper motor. Fuse is second in from top left (on the diag I have anyhow)
