A quick update on this...
Power Steering - The electric pump had a slipped brush, took it out, cleaned it refitted the brush, now works perfectly.
Headlights: These went up okay, but wouldn't go down. Got a new control unit. This is a black box about 10cm x 10cm x 3cm thick located just near the relays in the nearside end of the nosecone. The new control unit made no difference.
This unit basically switches an isolated earth and a live so the motors run either way (one motor per headlight). There are two connector blocks. One has green and white wires, the other has three red, one black and one grey/brown. The green wires are the 'up' live and the 'down' earth and the whites are the 'down' live and the 'up' earth. Thes go to the motors.
At the other connector, two of the reds are permanent live, the black is earth, the grey/brown is the 'up' live, the other red is the 'down' live.
All of the reds and the grey brown run though a 18 point connector block near the brake fluid reservoir. This connector is unsurprisingly crap. Test the reds and the grey brown either side of the connector block to check which is which - you'll need someone to turn the lights on and off. Ignore the twin greens and whites in this connector which are the supplies to the bulbs.
This connector will almost certainly be the problem. Initially though, just check the green and white output wires from the control box to check they come live at the right times. Then work back.
