The air intake pipe is so much bigger, but looking at the 1st picture it looks like the compresser vanes/wheel are about the same size.
Why might that be???

in terms of the external wastegate, i think it gives a lot better efficiency in the system.

An internal gate has a restricted & odd (not smooth) flow path & then dumps the gas at another odd angle back into the main zorst path creating turbulence.
An external gate allows for a much smoother flowing setup on the turbo & better gains...

Well i'm pretty sure thats what Corky's on about!

I'll be going to an external gate on the 5, with a separate pipe.

Externel wastegates?

Postby Tony Smith » Mon Nov 20, 2006 10:20 am

Is it possible to retro fit these to any turbo? They are fitted on most turbo race cars and my Skyline as standard so they must be a worthwhile fitting. Although I always thought recirculating type dump valves helped lag rather than 'creating turbulance'. Anybody (i.e. David  ) know?

Would be a bit awkward on the GTA without a major mod at the collector

I thought you had one of these Steve :?: Looks a less complicated option

I think you would run out of room heightwise with one of these and would need a new downpipe making up as well .

The smaller part of the wheel (the inducer - the bit you see) is about 3mm larger than what Steve had previously (and his previous turbo had a T4 compressor wheel to start with) and the exducer ( larger part of the wheel in the housing) is 75mm diameter, 15mm larger than the standard T3 wheel on the GTA.

The larger housing makes cooler boost, but the main reason why they make the larger housings is to fit the wider selection of larger wheels, which you can't squeeze into the T3 housing.

Couple of points on ext. WG's...

You see them on big power cars, as most of the time, the turbo they are using doesnt have provision for an internal gate, so its the only option they have..

Likewise, you can use it on a big turbo running at low boost, because if you are running low boost, you are not trying to have the main exhaust output from the engine running through the turbine wheel, you want to divert it away, so a good free flowing WG is nessecary as most of the engines exhaust will be going through it..

On the GTA, and if you use the housing that Steve has (I don't think he should bother with the ext.WG either) then it is fine as it is.

Ive used these before on other cars. You'd need to extend the oil drains and feeds too, and you wouldnt be able to run the heatsheilds..

I have been lead to beleive (via user comments on other forums) that the seller xs-power sells products that look the part but are manufactured to a quality that will fail quickly when ever a load is applied to them??? , so just be aware.

That is more of marketing way of looking at it.

From a technical standpoint, such a poor investment choice will culminate is a premature failure, resulting in less beer drinking time and your car will be plain FCUKED :!:

Steer clear of any mechanical (ie spinney round and round bits) but I don't think you'll have to much problems with flanges...

Then again their manifolds and intercoolers are crap too, so... :?

I thought they used araldite and that liquid metal compound instaed of welding parts together, so even flange adaptors could be less superior than everything else.

no, they must be used with a turbo that uses an external gate...
you *could* just hard close the internal waste gate, but that be a dodgy hack...!

I think the blow off valve has more to do with lag, which is on the intake side...

*correct me if i'm wrong on this one*

You can buy a blanking off plate (4mm thick steel) which will 'blank off  ' the wastegate port. You can then connect the downpipe straight to that and fit the ext. wg elsewhere..

With dumpvalves, its a bit of a myth, that the 'recirculated air is pushed back into the turbo to help it spinning'. Even off boost, it spinning faster than that dumped air could turn it. The reason most factory cars are equipped with a recirc design, is because of the noise, as no OEM company would want cars hissing down the road from the factory.
