Suggestions for a tear down and build up

Greetings from the US.

I just recieved a b280 for free and wish to build up a nice engine and was wondering what some suggestions are.

I saw on the web site the possibility of 3.5l with high compression? If so what's the costs?

Current thought is volvo bottom end with eagle premier heads, volvo cams, custom manifolds to prop a pair of turbos on, custom rods and pistons and the eagle intake manifold. My hope is to get 4-450hp out of this.

The rods I'll probably use are JE and measure 90mm in diameter without rings. This engine is meant to go in my DD for a good time. Oversized brakes and new suspension is getting added this summer to keep it the traditional volvo safe.

I'm also working on building a rally car and have a fully built b28 with transmision ready to go, just no car yet :evil:. This engine is a holley carbed that puts out 285whp, from what I've read that seems incredulous I know but the gentileman I bought the engine from said it was one of 4 all the exact same build up and this one was dyno'd at that before it was stored. The local volvo dealer parts man backed it up by telling me he sold the engines and remembers watching the car it was meant for race. He was pissed that I got the engine for 700.00 when he himself had offerd 5000.00 for it a couple years prior and knew of higher offers that were turned down. Because of the history of this engine I'm simply replacing gaskets and will do nothing to it hence the new build up.

Finally, I wish to replace the front main seal on the b28 and tear down the b280 so how do I get the crank pulley off? I put a screw driver through the cam gear and used a 30" breaker bar which I stepped on, I've now snapped 2 screw drivers to no avail.

So any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated and thanks for your time if you read this far.

Yes, the 3.5 conversion is on my site, and only for Z7X/Eagle heads and 3.0 bottom end. It requires the block to be machined to fit the larger liners and comes with forged pistons/rings. The benefit is the pistons have the same max height as the original 3.0 pistons and the increase in bore size is what brings the compression up. Cost is £1600 for the pistons\liner set, plus £150 for each custom head gasket, then block machining costs, which would require you to strip the whole engine down anyway..

Manifold wise, it depends on fitment. Im doing a biturbo conversion at the moment using these ceramic coated manifolds and twin ball bearing T28's with 3" downpipes from each, but whether this would fit in your engine bay is different matter. I can produce anything you like though...

400hp is not a problem if you plan and do things properly...

Since the sleeve from a premier engine can fit a b280 will the sleeves from your kit fit as well with block machining, the volvo bottom end is supposed to be stronger then the eagles and I plan on using eagle heads.

To the last question, nope I'm on the opposite coast. I was a bit sceptical but hopeful about the numbers claimed but after the volvo parts guy flipped over what I bought I'm hopeful the numbers are close. I'll actually find out this summer with some quarter mile runs, have a 500cfm holley carb ready to bolt on and am building a FI kit to get some better numbers from it.

To remove the pully, your bar is too short!!!

If engine still in car (and car is manual) select 5th, handbrake on, chock the wheels, helper stands on foot brake pedal, and use as long as a bar as you can!!!

Once bolt off, you will then need hub puller to pull the pully.

If car is auto, or engine is out of car, then good luck!! But try locking the fly wheel with heavy steel hooks on the starter ring. fasten engine to unmovable object, and use as long a bar as possible.

For intrest have just removed mine, I am 240lb, built like a 'brick poo house' and I still needed a 5ft bar to shift it!!!

Got my Turbo pulley and the Baccara's ( which had been sitting outside for months ) off out of the cars .You are both big girls blouses :lol: :lol: :wink: You need to soak ya nuts

You can lock the flywheel via hole in the main block at top ,there are holes in the flywheels rear face .
