Turbo 2, Turbo upgrade any ideas

Postby steveatyork » Mon Dec 04, 2006 7:03 pm

Im tempted to upgrade the turbo on the T2, any ideas on a good upgrade :?:

AET Turbos have suggested a good upgrade would be (quote) for power ( upto 320+BHP ) and spool-up would be our VT150-64, VT GT25/28 dual ball bearing Hybrid Turbo

Would the above turbo work on a T2, with the set-up not been the norm on a turbo 2 i.e. (Quote from the other forum ;-) ) basically the turbo 2 has a throttle plate before the turbo.
i.e
airfilter -metering head -throttle plate -turbo --intercooler -engine.

the throttle closes, when you take your foot off the accelerator, the turbo is still spinning, and trying to suck air past the throttle plate, this causes a vacuum and will suck oil past the compressor wheel from the turbo internals.

:? :? Whats the carbon seal? that keeps getting mentioned on the Turbo? Could a GT series turbo be modified :?:

Its worse then a GTA to get info on :D either no one knows and those that do dont want to tell ya :)

Just out of interest a genuine TDC manifold will be going on, with a charge cooler and water inj, this will mean the turbo will be swapping sides,

On a normal turbo, if you fit it to a turbo 2, the moment you close the throttle (which is in front of the turbo) the core is under enormous vacuum so the engine will suck all the oil out of the turbo..

The carbon seal basically stops this, not aware they do one to fit the GT series, as its such an old concept to have the throttle before the turbo..

All of the turbo's I do can be supplied with a carbon seal..

Your standard turbo has a 0.28 turbine housing and a 45 trim wheel, good for about 180-200 at a push..

I could do an upgrade using the 0.36 housing and a 50trim wheel which will be good for about 235bhp, or go a bit further and go for a 60trim wheel and a slightly bigger exhaust housing which will be good for circa 270bhp, but a bit more laggy. You can always swap exhaust housings easily enough if lag is a problem.

GT series is nice, but then you are looking around £700 most likely at least, and spec wise is no better power wise that the last T3 turbo I recommended. It has the 'advantage' of being ball bearing, but then the disadvantage of when the core dies, it cannot be rebuilt, it is a new core only, which is about 80% of the intial purchase price so not cheap, and the GT series havent got the greatest reliabilty life at present compared to the old T series..

I had a turbo technics t3 on my turbo 2 , just tell them the car has a throttle body before the turbo and that it needs the seal fitted to stop the oil getting sucked out and it will be ok . Mine was very good and reliable for years on 15 psi which is the most boost you can run without steel liners , forged pistons , full management , chargecoolers , water injection , blah , blah , blah , etc ,etc . :D
