Edinburgh Garage/Mechanic

Hello

My GTA has some problems - cutting out - and I have just moved to Scotland.

Can anybody please suggest where I should take for a service in the edinburgh area.

Welcome to Scotland - was it you who brought this mild weather with you?

I guess I should know where to get a GTA serviced/fixed - but the only garage mine has seen since I owned it is the one attached to the side of my house. Most of the people at the Renault dealerships in and around Edinburgh look at you like you are an alien if you go in and ask for parts for a GTA - god knows what they'd do if you asked them to service one.

Post up the symptoms - it might be one of the common faults that nearly everyone here has experienced (fuel pump wiring, sticking Idle Speed Control Valve, Flywheel sensor, oh and the favourite - dodgy earths!). If its just in need of a basic service (oil, plugs, filters) then I'm happy to help you do that if you want to find your way out to the wilds of Penicuik at some point.

Hopefully one of the other Edinburgh based members will be able to recommend you to someone that they entrust their cars to.

Thanks for the replies! Not sure what to do really as I'm not much of a mechanic!

Anyhow yesterday morning after driving a few miles (the car had not moved for 10 days) it cut out. Started again and cut out at the next lights. This time it wouldn't start so I called rescue service.

They came after about an hour later and it started!! It got me home and back to work today - say 6 miles each way.

Should I hope it doesn't happen again or take some action?

From the things that have been suggested:

Fuel pump - wiring or earth problem
Earths (other?)
sticking idle speed valve
fly wheel sensor

To be perfectly honest I would do well to find any of those let alone check if they are ok or contemplate repair

In summary I will never survive forever without mechanical help. Maybe it's time to have a change of car. Any offers

Sounds like the same problem I had with mine - Front fuel pump knackered. Check you can hear it running whilst the engine is running?
The symtoms are caused because when the car is primed, the rear pump draws fuel into the swirl pot located towards the back of the car. This is around litre or slightly bigger in capacity. The front fuel pump should continuosly feed the rear pump filling the swirl pot, if it fails the rear starts to strain and you get misfires or cutting out problems after about 10 or so miles (the swirl pot is empty).

You will need to get the front of the car in the air and remove the undertrya to reveal the front fuel pump. Replace or check wiring, earths etc.

Don't give up so easily I'm absolutley crap when it comes to the mechanics on cars but have a go from time to time and you will be amazed what you can achieve with some patience.

Ok well thanks for the advice and the encouragement.

As I'm going to get the spanners out I may as well try and fix another annoying fault. My wipers work ok but dont want to stop when switched off half the time. If they are switched back on and off a few times they usually go off. Any ideas?

Lastly has anybody driving in the Edinburgh area (or a guess somewhere else with such bad roads - Africa/India etc) noticed that standard GTA suspension for roads with big holes. In time I will need a solution for that is its too sore on my - normally ok - back.

My wipers do the same, usually in the coldest part of the year (winter). Summer time they are fine for some reason Anyway I think it's probably a bad EARTH somewhere. Did anyone tell you to check your earths

They can't be worse than the 'cart tracks' of london.
My local council are trying to put speed bumps in, but if they place them correctly it'll actually smooth the roads out...
