The best and the worst?

Postby Tony Smith » Thu Feb 08, 2007 8:25 am

Just a bit of fun - what are the best and worst cars you have owned (or still own!) - besides your Alpine (which could fit into either category with some of us!)

For me I'd say my Skyline is probably my next favourite to my black Alp. As for worst - so many to choose from - in recent years the Mondeo 24v ghia x-crement estate I had was horrible but the 1.6 L MK 3 Cortina I had 2nd car was probably the worst with no redeeming features (except possibly a sweet gearbox) and horrible reliability.
Alpines - GTA 3.0 Turbo, GTA 3.0 Inj (Project DD), GTA 6.2 V8 (500 bhp) , R32 Skyline GTR, BMW Alpina B10 635 Highline, Alpina B10 E39 5 Series, Jaguar 4.2 XKR, Laguna 205GT, BMW 120d.

im still sorry i sold my black trans-am (400 cu.in., four speed) 25 years ago. was going to work in the states at that time. had 500 nm and would do 240 quietly, not bad for a 78 vehicle. wasnt a gas guzzler either.

Tony, do you not test drive or research cars before you buy them. How come you say you have had so many bad cars. Surely any one who drives an Alpine is only going to be happy with something a bit special and driving "cars for the masses" is bound to be a tradgedy.

I bet you purchased these cars on ebay when you had been drinking, allways a good idea...... at the time!

I always drive and research anything I plan to keep but daily drivers and too good to refuse prices have led to a few duffers over the years! In the early years of my GTA ownership it was tough to afford another decent car too! Had a lot of good cars too, am probably somewhere around the 50-60 mark overall I reckon.

Buying cars on ebay pissed guarantees a good deal!

Blue Opel Monza 3.0S
White Volvo 480T
Black Alfa 164

all absolutely awful in their own ways, but great fun for 300quid!

Worst - 1982 Toyota Celica (slow, cumbersome and had a rusty hole in the boot that let exhaust fumes in...it wouldnt die either...slow torture! )
Best - thats too tough....love the GTA when it works, loved my Lancia Beta HPE, Alfa Sud ti, Alfa 75 V6 and my Jamun single seater...not forgetting my Skoda S110 coupe. Cant call it......but there have been loads of dogs too.....Alfa 33ti, Citroen Visa, Fiat tempra, Vauxhall Omega, Skoda 130RS replica, Fiat Uno etc etc.

having only ever owned 1 escort cab and 4 5 gt turbos i would say the cab was the worst as it was unreliable and slow(but it did have its good points with the ladies  ) and apart from the alp the 5 turbo is the best coz ive never driven a car thats so fun to drive(actually its more fun than the alp  )

Best car I've ever owned? Tough one- could be
1977 Alfasud 1.3 Ti- quick for 1300cc, revvy, good handling and absolutely relaible- how often do you hear that about alphasuds?
,
A610 (well I had to be loyal)

1997 Mondeo ST24 (quick& good handling, quiet and without the bodykit)

or

2000 Audi A6 2.5tdi quattro-(yes diesel)

They are all excellent in their own ways

Worst- even harder

Probably my 1999 Honda Accord 2.0 Vtec- cramped and slow- but got better with age- but well made- generally dull zzzzzzzz....

or my 1979 Alfasud Sprint- it was constantly devising new problems- springs breaking whilst parked, box sections filling with water and then leaking out on the seats, self destructing distributors, leaky brakes- oh and it was so SLOW- the earlier saloon was so much better.

It seems odd how the same "other cars" always come up here....taste for alpines seems to mean taste for Alpha's and Lancias too

Not owned many cars, but on that score I reckon the best would have to be my Xantia. 8 years of daily driving, approaching 170,000 miles and still gong strong. The occasional out-of-the-ordinary failure, but I don't think I've spent as much as £2000 on irregular maintenance the whole time I've owned it. It's comfortable, fast, economical and goes round corners with the best of "the rest".

Worst car - probably the 24v XM. Went like the clappers but put a smile on your face for all the wrong reasons!

Where would I put the DeLorean? Definitely my favourite, but not the best or worst car, on balance :)

Best: too hard to pin down to just one motor so for variose reasons it has to be my 68 cortina mk2 1600E, 309 1.9 GTI, Mercedes 190E, and of course my Atmo.

Worse: easily two, my old Fiat 131 Miro"fury" and an old dog Sierra estate 1.6 L which one freezing winter night on an un-lit country road dicided to throw one of its rear wheels away while i was doing 40mph made life very interesting----God i hated that crappy car.
never really ever thought that i would own a gta, but am i happy that i do!!.

I would say that the best cars i have owned are;
1/ Jaguar E type V12
2/ My Triumph TR7 V8 (For the sound and grunt)
3/ The RX7, OK its Japanese, but in truth it does everything better then all of the cars i have owned, But its Japanese :?

The worst :?
Deffo a Lada i owned a lot of years ago when my interest swung over to bikes, it was crap, didnt do anything well.

A surprise to my list  Might be a Series 1 Jensen Interceptor, The bloke who had the Jensen before me spent a fortune having it restored at Jensen motors, then the poor bigger died  before he could use it  So it was a good one, BUT it was thirsty,it handled crap, it was one of those BIG cars that feels even bigger to drive, the only thing it really did good was go fairly fast in a straight line

The Turbo 2, ill comment later when the mods are complete:wink:

Nearly forgot the Spider  Great on the twistys but a little lacking on power, nice car though
Renault Spider, Marcos Mantis, TR6...
