242bhp 2.6 A310 engine

Postby Stunned Monkey » Thu Mar 22, 2007 1:15 am

Just tracked down the photos I have of it. A lot of the work is obvious. The stuff that isn't is the very high compression ratio and the electronic mapped ignition.

How do you know it made 240bhp? Any pics of it in car? :)

I know what you mean :D It's ever so easy to dismiss something simply "because someone says so" - I offer an example however - I'm sure Dave didn't doubt the figures you got, because he knows and trusts you and your word is good enough (and I'm not about to argue either). I've spent enough time on the phone chewing Kevin's ear off to know that he knows, shall we say, rather a lot about PRVs, and have no reason to doubt his hp claims.

?...he had a dyno plot.... :?: :?: :?: ...and its in a car, driving, running.

An engine in a picture, is just an engine in a pic. It has a standard A310 backbox on it, and triple webers and tubular manifolds, which came standard on an A310 GT Pack 'Boulogne', and has the correct alloy rocker covers for it, which was 190hp so that pic could tell me its more one of them than anything different...

For all I know it could be a DeLorean engine with triple webers on it - that looks the same too. Oh, except the sump is very slightly different on the DeLorean, with a little "undercut" along the leading edge. We can all be pedantic.

It's just an engine in a pic that was sent to me by the guy who built it and raced it. That's good enough for me. Oh, and did the A310 ever come with that flywheel??!

Engines

Postby David Gentleman » Thu Mar 22, 2007 11:41 pm

It wouldnt look like a Delorean engine, because a D didnt come with triple webers and tubular manifolds as standard..

All I get miffed by, is if someone for instance has tuned an atmo for instance to 180bhp, they most of the time have pictures, and some dyno plots etc...I know I have..., yet how come, every time a 'really powerful' engine crops up, all details are hard to find, pics are not forthcoming, and no one has any information or proof, or the engine doesnt exist anymore/sold/dismantled..etc.....

And how come the engines that do have proof have sensible, realistic power outputs, yet the ones that have no proof, are always SO much more powerful...

Ive never known any engine that has as much speculation than the PRV,

Sorry if I find that strange...

He did once rattle off all the things that were done to this engine to get that power, but I struggle to remember half of it. I know it has pocketed pistons and at least a mil off the heads, lairy cams and big valves, completely re-bored (?) inlet ports so the carbs basically point at the back of the valve without having to go through an S-bend, lightened crank and flywheel, electronic (mapped) ignition...... it's a very special engine and I only have his word for it, but 5 minutes on the phone with him and I'm sure you'd believe it too...

Anyway, I just posted the pics because I thought people would be interested, just like with the LM600 piston - I'm not trying to prove anything.

Im not saying your trying to prove anything, but anyone could tell the spec for how to build a high power PRV, rattiling off things like high lift cams, big valves, ported heads...as they are just the generic tuning methods that I would EXPECT to hear...Thats the same for any engine, and doesnt prove anything..How would you tune an A-Series?...ported heads, big valve head, high lift cams blah blah blah...

What I would be asking is what type of oil cooling/circulation system it used, the fuel supply/swirl pot/fuel pump and regulator system, was the engine breathing circuit modified for this kind of RPM, any improved crankcase windage control , what kind of ignition system.. At that power level, all that is just as important as sticking a set of carbs and manifolds on it...All the group 4 A310s engines which ran 240bhp had these types of systems, but none of that is visible on that picture.

Given the 88 and 91mm blocks are internally identical apart from the liner seats, I'd say everything above is standard - if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Example: The Z7U, as you know, is capable of well in excess of 242hp without any mods to the above AND runs a turbo off the same oil supply.*

I've got a Z7U running a bar of boost on a standard DeLorean ignition system so I know for a fact there's more than enough oomph if you pick the right coil and plug set.

* NB this refers to the early gen 91mm blocks (used in the early Z7U's, B28 and Z7W engines) prior to the cross-bolted journals when the oil pump grew ever-so-slightly deeper.

Yep, fitting high lift cams is easy. Making them last more than 200 miles is not so simple. Try it.

I give up

Martin, 240bhp on a turbo, will not require over 8000rpm to do it will it.....
