My best was probably a 1980 BMW 730 auto for £175, some of the windows even worked but needed a second hand alternator - £25 Ran it for 6 months (15000miles) then sold it to a breaker for £150!

I bought a petrol driven self propelled mountfield mower on ebay for £5 (it even came with a full tank of petrol), I cleaned the plug, it ran like a dream, used it for 2 seasons and sold it for £50 to the family that purchased the house when we left.
A 10 fold return on my investment.

A Renault Safrane 3.0V6 RT for £51, thanks to eBay. Sailed through its MOT recently, and has had just £134 spent on it replacing rocker gaskets and getting a service.

It's going on a pan-European rally in late September, painted up in 1992 Williams-Renault F1 colours :D

A chap at work has a family run skip business.
He came in to work one day with around 8 Tori Amos CDs that found in a skip. He didnt want them, I expressed an interest so he gave them to me.
After listening to a couple of tracks I decided they werent for me so I offered them back.
He said bin em.
So, I put them on ebay starting bid 99p plus £2.50 postage.

7 days later....

sold to the highest bidder for £32 plus postage

He doesnt offer me CDs anymore !
......cant think why :)

Was given a F reg 1.6 Astra estate passed mot with advise on rear sills, run the poor car for two years, total spent was £150, apart for the paint peeling off she took me everywhere in the country to pick up engines and other parts unfortunately last year the sills were not an advise anymore, sold it to a chav for £200 because he wanted the engine for his Nova. She was a BEAUTY! :D

Now I have another Astra estate this time 1.4 K reg which i bought off a bloke who had it from new, cheap tax, petrol and lovely paint job and sills.

I have bought a few in my day!

My best bargains have to be the two Bimmers -

'98 318is Coupe for £1200 with no MOT, put it through with no money spent and sold three weeks later for £2350!

'94 316i SE 4 door for £400 with 84k and a full book of BMW stamps bought a year ago. The missus is still driving it, and all I've spent is the cost of road tax and insurance! Was offered £1200 for it recently but the missus won't let me sell it!

Bargains

I think in percentage terms this one is hard to beat. Got my girlfriend a mint low mileage 309 auto for her first car a couple of years ago - £49 on E-bay. £10 to get through MOT, used it for a year and a half - about 12k miles and then sold for £325!

Whilst wandering through the local scrappie, I noticed a rare BX GTi 4x4 - completely gutted for all its drivetrain parts as one might expect. The badge was still on the bumper so I snaffled it. Offered to pay for it, was given it for free.

Sold on ebay for £11.50

My friend Rich managed the biggest deal I know of. Bought some sort of large thing-that-looks-like-a-multimeter in one of those lost parcel auctions. Paid £310 for it, worked out what it was (mobile phone test equipment) made a few phone calls and sold it for £3500. But this is digressing from the car theme :D

That was a major episode in the DeLorean community. No D's were harmed in the making of that program (believe it or not) everything was donor parts that all came from Don Steger at DeLorean motor Center in California. No Vin's were lost :)

Apparently it was sabotaged too. I dunno...

My old 21 Turbo Quadra, paid £50 for it - the guy was going to give it to me but it was so good when I went to pick it up I could'nt believe my luck and gave him £50 for a night out!

My mate hit me up the asp in his TVR and I got £700 to repair it myself (some t -cut and a £20 replacement 2nd hand bumper sorted that out). It then caught fire on the M6 (faulty oil feed pipe) and got paid out £2000 on the insurance, sad loss but I then put some more cash to it and bought the Alpine 8)
