Rear Caliper Overhaul

Brakes International are not able to supply rear calipers at the mo .This may be the shape of things to come .They do however stock a rebuild kit and pistons ,these arrived nextday and are the correct units
You strip the units down as per the manual but you also need to remove and reinstall the handbrake workings from the back of the old piston as the new ones come as blanks .
I've cleaned up the bodys and just waiting on some paint before reassembling
Total cost to do both calipers £95.91 .

I have just had my troublesome 610 caliper apart (slightly bigger versions of the GTA ones) . Of course the usual stuck nuts, but I thought I was doing well until I got the new pistons out of the box and found out they were empty.
Ever one for a challenge, I then removed the circlip on the old one, then spent 10 minutes searching for all the bits on the garage floor (actually found under the spare in the 610) and then worked out how to get it back together.
Happy I could do this correctly, I took all the parts out again, only to find that there is an odd assembly- looks pushed in, under the ratchets and spring washers, surrponding the ratchet spring.
This seems to be a reducing sleeve,, with an o ring at the top and has some small cut outs at the top (4 of them) - seemingly for some kind of tool.
When you did your GTA calipers, did you find something similar inside the pistons, and if so how did you transfer them to the new pistons without damage??

Sorry this post not about more BHP, just now more stopping seems like a nice idea to me!!

The pistons on the GTA come empty and you have to swap the bits over from the old units .You have a big retaining clip and plate ,under that a ball race .This is what it all looks like..



The only special tool I have is to compress the washers to get the cam back in .The big spring clip inside the piston takes some effort to get out and back in

Mr Sage advises to make sure you shim correctly on re-assembly to give minimum play in the self adjuster mechanism. Does it look like there is any scope for adjustment?

By the way the main body is aluminium and looks very nice (and original) vapour bead blasted. Mr Sage had 5 or 6 done that way when I visited at the weekend.

I had my A610 top cover done the same way and can confirm that the special 'peened' bare finish doesn't corrode.

That's what I would have thought, but it's like a micro polish and stays really nice especially with a little WD. Probably not the best thing to be spraying around near your brakes though
